Xiaomi finally launched its first U.S. product, but it’s not a smartphone. Instead, an official U.S. edition of its budget-friendly Yi action camera is now available and it costs less than $100.
The Chinese OEM raised great interest worldwide due to its quality devices with affordable price tags, but none of its products have been available in the U.S. so far. While the company has still not launched a high-end smartphone or tablet stateside, it nonetheless took a first step in the right direction.
The Xiaomi Yi action camera is now the first product from the company to get an official U.S. edition, and it’s available forpurchase now for just $99.95 on Amazon. The retailer also offersan action camera kit, which is a bundle containing the Yi camera and a Bluetooth remote for $139.94. At the same time, Amazon is also offering other accessories for the device. A handlebar bike mount costs $15.95, while an official Yi camera Waterproof casesells for $32.95.
The Xiaomi Yi action camera made its formal debut back at the MWC 2015 earlier this year, arriving as a cheap alternative to GoPro action cams. It may not have the power of top GoPros, but it can compete with more basic GoPro offerings.
The Yi camera comes with a 16-megapixel Sony sensor that can shoot 1080p video at 60 fps, packs 64 GB of internal storage space and rocks a 155-degree ultra-wide angle lens that allows for neat group selfies or wide panoramic views. The storage can be expanded via microSD, but users will have to purchase the card separately.
The gadget further features built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and microphone, and allows for real-time video streaming and full remote control from a smartphone. In terms of battery life, the Yi camera has a 1,100 mAh rechargeable battery that should last for up to 90 minutes of continuous use.
Overall, the Xiaomi Yi action camera is nothing groundbreaking, but its sub-$100 price point will likely be the main selling point.
Lastly, the retailer points out that the U.S. Xiaomi Yi action camera limited release is available only through Amazon Exclusives. The $99.95 Yi camera is now in stock and ready to ship.
