Tumblr founder and chief David Karp on Monday announced he is leaving the nearly 11-year-old blogging platform – with his departure coming in the wake of Verizon buying parent-company Yahoo.
Karp said that he will leave by the end of this year and chief operating officer Jeff D’Onofrio will take his place at the helm of Tumblr.
“I beg you to understand that my decision comes after months of reflection on my personal ambitions, and at no cost to my hopefulness for Tumblr’s future or the impact I know it can have,” he said in a copy of a letter to employees that he posted online.
Karp founded Tumblr in New York in early 2007 as a platform where people could share writing and short-form media. Now, Tumblr hosts some 380 million different blogs.
“We made it really, really simple for people to make a blog and put whatever they want on it. Stories, photos, GIFs, TV shows, links, quips, dumb jokes, smart jokes, Spotify tracks, mp3s, videos, fashion, art, deep stuff,” reads a self-description on the website.
Yahoo acquired Tumblr in May 2013 for $1.1 billion (roughly 7,087 crores), as part of an effort to better connect with younger online users.
Meanwhile, Verizon’s online unit Oath – which includes the AOL and recently acquired Yahoo brands – is cutting several hundred jobs as part of a reorganisation, a source familiar with the move said earlier this month.
The reductions represent “less than four percent” of the Oath global workforce of an estimated 12,000, according to the source.
The move represents a second round of cuts at Oath since the $4.5 billion acquisition of Yahoo in June.
“We’re about four months post-close of Verizon’s acquisition of Yahoo, and we’ve made these changes to our team to further align our global organization to our 2018 roadmap,” Oath said in a statement at the time.
Media reports said the move would eliminate an estimated 560 jobs in different Oath business units such as advertising and engineering.
Verizon has so far maintained the Yahoo brand, which has some one billion users worldwide for its email, news and other services.
Yahoo’s sale capped a long decline from when it had a peak market value of some $125 billion (roughly Rs. 8,05,441 crores) in 2000.

Responding to demands to help curb smartphone addiction amongst children, Apple said the iPhoneand other devices running on its mobile software already offer a variety of controls that enable parents to restrict or block “effectively anything a child could download or access online.” However, it would bring “new features and enhancements” in future updates.
“We think deeply about how our products are used and the impact they have on users and the people around them,” Apple said in the statement. “We take this responsibility very seriously and we are committed to meeting and exceeding our customers’ expectations, especially when it comes to protecting kids.” The company said it is “constantly looking” to improve its offerings, and that it plans new features that will make parental controls “even more robust.”
To recall, two major Apple investors have urged the iPhone maker to help curb smartphone addiction among children, highlighting a growing concern about the effects of gadgets and social media on youngsters.
New York-based Jana Partners LLC and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System said in open letter to Apple that the company must offer more choices and tools to help children fight addiction to its devices. The two investors collectively control $2 billion (roughly Rs. 12,700 crores) worth of Apple shares.
“Apple can play a defining role in signalling to the industry that paying special attention to the health and development of the next generation is both good business and the right thing to do,” the letter said.
Among their proposals to Apple: Establish a committee of experts, including child development specialists; offer Apple’s “vast information resources” to researchers; and enhance mobile device software so that parents have more options to protect their children’s health.
The investors’ letter cited various studies on the negative effects of smartphones and social media on children’s mental and physical health. Examples include distractions from digital technologies in the classroom, a decreased ability of students to focus on educational tasks, and higher risks of suicide and depression.
A study published in November suggested that heavy smartphone use and social media exposure among teens may contribute to depression and other traits linked with suicide. But that and similarly designed research cannot rule out that already troubled teens may be more likely than others to be frequent users of smartphones and social media.
In its most recent update on teens and media use, the American Academy of Pediatrics said in 2016 that social media and internet use have benefits and potential risks for teens. It urged families to create their own media use plans that include consistent time and content limits.
The American Psychiatric Association does not consider heavy internet use a true mental addiction and says more research is needed.
The letter released Saturday touches upon the growing concerns about the long-term impact of gadgets and social media, especially for those who start to use smartphones at an early age.
While tech companies have not acknowledged openly that their gadgets may be addictive, some Silicon Valley insiders have begun to speak about how gadgets, mobile applications and social media sites are designed to be addictive and to keep users’ attention as long as possible.
Facebook’s founding president, Sean Parker, said recently, for example, that the company exploits a “vulnerability in human psychology” to addict its users. He called its stream of comments, “likes” and reactions a “social validation feedback loop that exploits how human brains work.” And, he said, “God only knows what it’s doing to our children’s brains.”
James Steyer, the CEO of Common Sense Media, a nonprofit that studies kids’ technology use, called the letter a “big deal” in the ongoing effort to make it clear that cellphones are a “public health concern.”
“It’s the beginning of a much bigger conversation about these issues and it’s great that shareholders care about it,” he said.
Apple said it regularly considers how the iPhone and its other products affect the people who use them. “We take this responsibility very seriously and we are committed to meeting and exceeding our customers’ expectations, especially when it comes to protecting kids,” the company said.
Steyer said Apple is in a position to do more. Among other things, he said, Apple can finance independent research on the effects of mobile phone use and pay for public education campaigns that teach parents and kids about responsible technology use. He said Apple can also design addiction-prevention features, such as an automatic shut-off after an hour.
But Steyer said a bigger problem is with social media companies “designing platforms to grab and retain your children.” He said companies such as Twitter, Facebook and Snap will change “only with major pressure from the public and from shareholders.”
The Apple letter is the start of a bigger push by one of the investors, Jana, to focus on socially responsible investing, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The investor, the Journal said, is planning to raise billions of dollars to launch a new fund, Jana Impact Capital, to invest in companies that should be “better corporate citizens.” The idea is that responsible companies can produce better long-term value not just for shareholders, but for society.

This is not the first time cricket matches have led to arrests in Kashmir. (Representational photo)
The issue was raised in the state assembly today. Bandipore legislator Usman Majeed made a fervent appeal to the government to release the cricketers and show leniency for them on the pattern of stone throwers.
“There were some mischievous elements who created this problem, it is a far flung area and I think people were made to do this under pressure, police is now after the cricketers and this has also come in the media, but I don’t think cricketers had any bad intentions,” said Mr Majeed.
Joining the chorus, independent legislator Engineer Rashid – who was marshalled out of the assembly – said it was no crime to sing Pakistani anthem and the government action smacks of hypocrisy.
But the ruling BJP says it won’t allow anti national activities in the state.
This is not the first time cricket matches have led to arrests in Kashmir. Several Kashmiri cricketers were reportedly detained last year in Ganderbal district after a video clip surfaced in social media showing them wearing the Pakistani team’s jersey with the neighbouring country’s national anthem playing in the background.

“Daughters are the best,” Amitabh Bachchan, father of 43-year-old Shweta, has made it clear many times over on social media. His latest post show Shweta joining him for the weekly Sunday morning meet-and-greet ritual at the Bachchans’ Mumbai home. This isn’t the first or even the second time. Amitabh Bachchan frequently posts pictures of Shweta and granddaughters Navya Naveli and Aaradhya on social media with almost the same caption which reads: “Daughters are the best.” Just last week, Mr Bachchan shared pictures of Navya Naveli (daughter of Shweta and Nikhil Nanda) and Aaradhya (daughter of Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and wrote: “Daughters be the best… granddaughters the bestest.” There are few corresponding posts for son Abhishek, almost none of grandson Agastya.
On Monday, he posted these pictures of Shweta at Jalsa with him on his social media platforms. On his blog he wrote: “When the daughter takes an interest in your actions on a Sunday at the gates of Jalsa, it fills one with pride and affection.”
On a previous Sunday, Amitabh Bachchan reserved his best smile for Shweta because… you already know.
Here are all the other times when Amitabh Bachchan reminded his fans that ‘daughters are the best.
Last year, around this time, Shweta hosted a surprise dinner for all the family members in Jalsa, which Amitabh Bachchan described on his blog as a “wonderful occasion out of nothing.” Of his daughter’s initiative he had said: “Daughters are very special and mine, Shweta, must be the most beautiful in the world. Daughters are the best.”
Amitabh Bachchan is currently filming Yash Raj Film’s Thugs Of Hindostan and will soon shift focus to Karan Johar’s trilogy Brahmastra, co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. Amitabh Bachchan is awaiting the release of 102 Not Out, which also features Rishi Kapoor.

Twitter announced Tuesday it has doubled the limit for tweets to 280 characters, a bid to draw in more users and boost engagement at the social network.
Giving users twice the space to voice their thoughts ushers in a new era for the online platform, whose hallmark 140-character cap had encouraged users to craft succinct missives.
“We’re expanding the character limit! We want it to be easier and faster for everyone to express themselves,” tweeted the site, which started testing an increase to its limit in most languages in early September.
The changes will be rolling out in all languages except Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, in which space limitations have not been an issue, Twitter said.
It is the first time the tweet character cap has been raised since Twitter was founded 11 years ago.
Twitter, which has been lagging behind rival social networks in user growth and struggling to reach profitability, faced a dilemma over the change in that it could alienate longtime users and transform the nature of the service.
Product manager Aliza Rosen said in a blog post that the test showed most people still used 140 characters or fewer, suggesting the fast-moving nature of Twitter will not change.
“Our goal was to make this possible while ensuring we keep the speed and brevity that makes Twitter, Twitter,” Rosen said. “We’re excited to share we’ve achieved this goal and are rolling the change out to all languages where cramming was an issue.”
Brevity endures
Rosen noted that in the first few days of the test many people used the full 280-limit because it was new and novel, “but soon after behavior normalized.”
As a result, “the brevity of Twitter remained,” she said.
While Twitter itself changed the way people communicate in the internet age, doubling the tweet character limit promised to shift it once again, according to Jennifer Grygiel, an assistant professor of communications at Syracuse University.
“It will slow down the speed at which users consume information and will allow for more clarity,” Grygiel said.
“This might not be a bad thing during a time when world leaders are making military threats via the platform.”
US President Donald Trump favors the platform for making major policy announcements, as well as criticizing allies, taunting opponents and threatening North Korea with destruction.
He sent his inaugural 280-tweet while on South Korea as part of his Asia tour: “Getting ready to make a major speech to the National Assembly here in South Korea, then will be headed to China where I very much look forward to meeting with President Xi who is just off his great political victory.”
Glances and Likes
Some users have worried that longer tweets could profoundly change the nature of the one-to-many messaging platform, which is popular with journalists and politicians but has failed to win the mass appeal of rivals like Facebook.
There was also worry that raising the character cap would give blowhards and abusers more room to spout.
“I will gladly give up my extra 140 characters if Twitter will delete Trump’s account,” author and civil rights commentator DaShanne Stokes said in a tweet fired off from @dashannestokes.
Stokes said Twitter’s move gives Trump “a bigger weapon with which to hurt more people.”
Twitter, which became a public company in 2013, has never reported a profit, even though it has built a loyal base of celebrities, journalists and political figures, including prolific tweeter Trump.
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said that longer test tweets got tended to prompt more engagement by others using the service.
“In addition to more Tweeting, people who had 280 characters received more Likes, Retweets, @mentions, Followers, and were more satisfied with Twitter. So, you’ll be getting 280 too — enjoy!” Stone tweeted.
Some analysts maintain longer tweets are not the fix Twitter needs, and may even change the appealing ability to take in messages with glances.
It also risks Twitter looking a bit more like Facebook, one analyst contended, and might prompt the leading online social network to respond to what it might see as a competitive threat.
Meanwhile, many users welcomed the news and said raising the character cap was long overdue. Some people already resort to long strings of rapid-fire tweets, known as “tweet storms,” to string together lengthy comment.
Last month, Twitter reported its loss for the past quarter narrowed as the company suggested it could reach profitability for the first time in the fourth quarter.
The update showed Twitter’s monthly active user base rose slightly to 330 million, roughly in line with forecasts.

Micro-blogging service Twitter has more than doubled the display name character count to 50. The new change comes merely days after all Twitter users received the 280-character tweet limit support. Previously, Twitter supported 20 character display names, which was criticised by many.
The successive changes on tweet character limit and now display name indicates the company is looking to increase user engagement in new ways. The company announced the news in a tweet, and wrote, “Starting today, your Twitter display name can be up to 50 characters in length! Go ahead, add that middle name or even a few more emojis.” For changing display name, Twitter users can head to Profile settings on Twitter app (Android or iOS) or open Twitter.com and choose Edit Profile.
With the new announcements, Twitter users can now have display name up to 50 characters long while username (or @handle) can be up to 15 characters long. For those confused with the difference between username and display name on Twitter, a username appears in profile URL and is unique to a user. It is usually also called as Twitter handle and is displayed as @XYZ. It’s also used for logging in, replies, and Direct Messages while display name is a personal identifier (like a real name) displayed in profile page and used to identify a user. On Twitter, display name and username are generally not the same.
Earlier this week, the double character limit on Twitter received a mixed response from Twitterati. The 280-character limit replaced 140-character limit which was there since the beginning.
