Qualcomm Rebrands Snapdragon 618, Snapdragon 620 SoCs

Qualcomm has re-branded two of its mid-range SoC models. The chipmaker announced that the Snapdragon 620 will now be referred to as the Snapdragon 652, and the Snapdragon 618 has been renamed to Snapdragon 650.

The company is renaming the models and putting them in the Snapdragon 65x series to better reflect their features and put a clear distinction between them from 610 and 620 lineup of models. The Snapdragon 620 and Snapdragon 618 processors, which were launched earlier this year, offer advanced X8 LTE modem-technology with Cat. 6 support and carrier aggregation. In addition, both the chipsets also offer support for 4K Ultra HD video capture, and better playback and gaming experiences.

“The Snapdragon 620 and 618 have significant user experience and performance advantages even within the current 600 tier of processors,” the company wrote in a blog post. On the basics, too, the SoCs feature advanced ARM-A72 CPU with next generation Qualcomm Adreno 510 GPU. The Snapdragon 616, 615 don’t feature Adreno 510 GPU.

“The renaming is to recognize the significant modem, processing, graphics, and camera advantages these two processors bring to the Snapdragon 600 tier. We’ve been developing the Snapdragon 652 and Snapdragon 650 processors over the last 12 months, and the superior capabilities and performance positions them well above other processors in this tier.”

There’s no reason for you to get confused, as neither of models are currently powering any device. Also, the Snapdragon 650 series is a new lineup. Both the chipsets, the company noted, will be available soon worldwide.
