Free apps make millions of dollars – here’s how they do it

Instagram, Clash of Clans, Tinder, and Snapchat are all free. In fact, 90-percent of apps are free because people expect them to be free. So how do developers stay in business?

In-app advertising

In-app advertising is the most popular and profitable way to monetize an app. Because everyone spends massive amounts of time scrolling, watching, and engaging, in-app advertising is the fastest growing form of mobile advertising. App-install ad revenue is estimated to grow to more than $100 billion by 2020, according to BI Intelligence.

The concept is simple: advertisers pay for impressions and clicks, and the developer profits from it.

Remember Taco Bell’s sponsored Snapchat Lense? That campaign raked in 224 million views, and cost Taco Bell tens of millions of dollars. Fortunately, it paid off, because, in addition to a whopping 224 million views, Snapchat stated that the time users spent messing around with the filter was the equivalent of 12.5 years of play ー in one day.

In-app purchases

If you’ve ever impulsively bought a Candy Crush Bundle, you’re a victim of the in-app purchase. These are tempting offers developers strategically create to crack open your wallet. These in-app purchases take the disguise of add-ons, power ups, boosters, extras ー you name it.

A little over 5-percent of users spend money on in-app purchases, yet how much money these customers spend is 20x greater than what companies earn from all other users combined. In-app purchase revenue is projected to reach $37 billion by the end of this year ー which speaks to how desperate people are to reach that next level.

Freemium

This method of monetization is similar to in-app purchases but has a slight difference. To access the complete feature set, you need to cash out for the premium version.

According to Apple:

In the freemium business model, users pay nothing to download your app and are offered optional in-app purchases for premium features, additional content, or digital goods.

Spotify is a great example of a company utilizing the freemium model. If you refer to the comparison below, the average broke Spotify listener is very limited when it comes to using the app. On the other hand, Premium listeners have access to every feature available.

The music streaming app pushes its users to become Premium users pretty aggressively. Almost every ad is about upgrading to premium or trying the 30-day free trial ー and it works. Of Spotify’s 75 million Monthly Active Users, 20 million are paying customers. For context, the average freemium conversion rate is 2 to 4-percent, but Spotify’s is 27-percent.

Subscriptions

Productivity and content-based apps (newspapers) typically use subscriptions to create recurring revenue. Because this revenue model typically requires a lot more cash and data from users, it’s not as popular as other monetization methods. But the apps which do use this strategy pull it off well.

Apps that utilize subscriptions earn 2-3x more than apps that rely on advertising or paid downloads. They also earn 50% more compared to apps that offer in-app purchases.

Take the meditation app Headspace for example. To truly “unlock the full Headspace experience,” one must commit to an annual subscription of a mere $7.99/mo.
The company’s annual revenue is more than $50 million and is valued at $250 million. Not bad for a free app that helps you breathe.

How to update Kodi on FireStick - and everything else you need to know

Kodi has released an updated version of its popular open-source app to fix a number of bugs and security issues.

The makers said the latest update – Kodi 17.3 – has some important fixes after cyber security firm Check Point claimed hackers could easily gain access to people’s computers and devices using the Kodi app.

Kodi 17.3 now includes a patch to prevent malicious zip files from infecting and harming people’s devices and media players, its makers added.

Kodi wrote in a statement: ‘Our developers fixed this secuity gap and have added the fix to this v17.2 release. As such we highly encourage all users to install this latest version!

‘Any previous Kodi version will not get any security patch. We have began the roll out of this version and Android Play Store as well as Windows Store have this update pending and will roll out as soon as possible.’

Okay, back to basics. Kodi is an app designed to allow users to stream films, shows, games and programmes free of charge.

It’s an open-source bit of software that was originally designed for Xbox but has gone on to grow from there. It is owned by the not for profit organisation XBMC Foundation.

It can be live-streamed on Amazon Fire TV Stick.

What is the FireStick?

FireStick looks a bit like a flash drive.

It can plug into the HDMI port of a television to enable the television to stream content over wifi. This might include Netflix, YouTube, HBO Ho and others.

Why is Kodi controversial?

There’s a recent legal case where a trader in Middlesborough was found guilty of selling ‘fully-loaded’ TV boxes modified to allow any user to gain access to paid-for television services for free.

The trader was ordered to pay £250,000 after selling the boxes to bars and pubs.

However the software itself isn’t illegal nor are the boxes – the trader was only prosecuted as his boxes were ‘fully loaded’ with plug ins and add ons that allowed access to pirated television shows and this is in breach of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

Installing Kodi on your Firestick is perfectly legal as long as you are not downloading any pirated content or paid-for subscription content, according to The Daily Mirror.

How to update Kodi on FireStick

1) Go to the HOME screen on your FireStick device

2) Enable ADB debugging through SYSTEM / SETTINGS

3) Go to SEARCH on the FireStick HOME screen and type ‘DOWNLOADER’ to search for the downloader app

4) Select ‘APPS AND GAMES’ in the search results and click to download and install

5) After it is installed, open the app and tap in http://bit.ly/kodi173arm then download it

6) If the downloader app doesn’t open the file automatically, click OPEN FILE to open the file and select install

7) Click OPEN APP to open and start Kodi

Schools and colleges in England have suffered the worst fall in spending since the depths of the 1970s, according to a report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

The IFS research into education spending says the government’s promised increases in funding will barely repair the squeeze endured since 2010.

The report found that adult education, further education and skills spending on young people have been hardest hit by austerity since 2010, with spending on classroom-based adult education or apprenticeships down by more than a third since 2009-10.

The government has recently committed to increasing spending on schools in England, which the IFS calculates as amounting to £4.3bn extra a year by 2022. It said the extra money will “just about reverse” the 8% cuts in spending per pupil since 2009.

“Even so, an effective 13-year real-terms freeze will still represent an unprecedented period without growth,” the IFS noted, going back to “at least” the 1970s.

The analysis revealed that sixth form and further education colleges received some of the largest cuts across all areas of education over the last decade, and the extra funding promised from next year still leaves them with 7% less spending than 2010.

“The 2019 spending round provided genuinely substantial increases in school funding, enough to more or less offset all cuts since 2009. Of course, that still means no real growth in spending per pupil over a 13-year period,” said Luke Sibieta, co-author of the report and a research fellow at the IFS.

“The extra £300m for further education and sixth forms provides for a small rise in 2020 but at least a further £1.1bn would be required to fully reverse cuts since 2010.”

David Hughes, chief executive of the Association of Colleges, said the IFS report showed the reality of cuts experienced in further education: “The consequences of the decline in spending and real-term freezes has meant fewer adult learners, squeezed budgets and lack of resource to provide the skills the country needs.”

The Department for Education said its new funding was “the biggest cash boost for a decade”.

“The prime minister is clear that education is one of his main priorities, and we want a system that boosts productivity, improves social mobility and equips children and adults with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed,” a spokesperson said.

But Jules White, a headteacher in West Sussex who founded the Worth Less? campaign against funding cuts, said the IFS report made it clear that school budgets were in a critical position.

“Over the past decade, huge holes have also arisen in special educational needs and disability funding and wider support services for children,” he said.

“These issues and potential future cost pressures are making heads across the country feel very concerned that a very positive sounding announcement may not be as good as it first seemed.”

Paul Whiteman, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, said: “This report shows just how much spending has been cut on preventive services for families. Schools are on the front line when it comes to helping families and dealing with children’s mental health and wellbeing.”

The IFS found that only spending on early years and higher education avoided the cuts seen elsewhere, with the spending on early years “increasingly skewed” towards childcare for working parents and away from supporting children in low-income families.

The IFS calculated that universities receive £27,500 per student for teaching, a 50% increase since a low point in the 1990s.

The IFS estimates that the current system costs about £17bn for each year of undergraduates entering university, with more than half of the cost recovered in loan repayments of £9bn, mainly from higher-earning graduates.

The long-run cost to the government is about £8bn for each year, including £7.4bn in unpaid loans and £700m in grants.

Forget Sats – find a true measure of education

Amanda Spielman may be warning the wrong people about exam anxiety, certainly as far as younger kids are concerned (Ofsted chief says teachers can cause ‘subliminal’ exam anxiety, May 14). My 10-year-old is not worried because I have told him Sats are irrelevant to his life. His secondary school will determine how best he will fit in, based on its own testing, when he gets there in September. I did ask him to do his best in sympathy with the people who are sweating it out this week: his excellent teachers, whose lives – and the rating of the school – depend on how he does at rote nonsense.

Meanwhile, the true quality of his education is illustrated by the year 6 leavers’ scrapbook year after year, which always tells the same story: the stellar moments each child remembers are extracurricular experiences such as acting in plays, spending a week together on Exmoor or learning about Mary Anning in Lyme Regis. We parents can also play our part – as a lawyer, I have supervised the trial of three teachers for “murdering” the headteacher, with the local police arriving to oversee the investigation. (They were all acquitted by exemplary 10-year-old jurors, I am glad to say.)

We should deliver a token of our respect and thanks to the anxious teachers when the Sats end on Thursday. Meanwhile, when will the government accept that teachers should be allowed to inspire, rather than having to cram tedious material down the throats of their enthusiastic goslings? Perhaps begin by allowing them a free day a week to seek out the child’s passion.

• Fiona Millar warns us of the risks of abolishing Sats and says we should not go back to the pre-testing days of the early 1990s (Education, 14 May). But no one in the debate reignited by Jeremy Corbyn and Layla Moran is advocating a system without assessment. The right kind of assessment matters, because we need to support pupils’ learning more effectively. It matters because we need to identify problems in schools and put them right. There is no dispute about this.

What Corbyn and Moran – like the OECD and many national governments – have pointed out is that the system we have neither supports learners nor provides useful information about schools. That’s why it needs to change. Nor is anyone suggesting that changes to assessment alone will be enough to mend the damage done to our primary schools. The way we evaluate schools has to be rethought, as does the way we teach and assess pupils. To this end, we need to think boldly and comprehensively. Millar’s approach, which points to the size of the problems as a reason to doubt the capability of reformers to address them, falls short of what is required.

• Most present and past teachers, like myself, could confirm the sense of the research finding in your report (Teacher assessment could take place of many tests, study says, 13 May). Most have been arguing for years about the negative effects of excessive testing and league tables.

Teachers work closely with students to help them make progress in their learning, while nurturing their wellbeing. It is their job – in my case, a vocation and what I spent four years training to do. I hope politicians will heed this research.

Add the drop in students doing foreign languages because the papers are too hard – people should look at maths too – and it’s easy to conclude that our education system is deeply flawed.

The tech firm was forced to make an announcement because hackers managed to uncover the bug before Google found it – which is a major cause for concern.

Google regularly fixes bugs that can exploit your computer software and reduce computer security.

But sometimes, these bugs are known as ‘zero-day’ – that’s when cyber-crooks work out how to exploit the glitch before Google itself.

It means the firm had zero days to prepare to tackle the problem because they didn’t know it could happen.

That’s the case with this latest bug, which means hackers have had a head-start – and that’s bad news for you.

Cyber-criminals could exploit the vulnerability to remotely take over computers

Chrome users don’t need to panic though as they can simply update their browser to protect themselves.

Detailed information about what will happen if users don’t update their software has not yet been revealed.

Google said: “Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix.

“We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed.”

However, some tech experts are theorising that the security vulnerability could allow hackers to implant malware without any warnings or popups, read files and potentially even take over computers remotely.

Chrome security researcher Justin Schuh wrote on Twitter: “Also, seriously, update your Chrome installs… like right this minute.”

Blogging for Entrepreneurs II â Writing Essential Money Pages

In the first part of Blogging for Entrepreneurs, I started laying a strong foundation for a successful blog. If you have been following my tips, chances are you have already found a niche and selected a name for your blog. Presuming that’s done, your next step is to write 4 essential pages (call them money pages) and content elements on your blog space. So, let’s get started.

About Me Page

Your “about me” page is one perfect place to share your story with your visitors and help turn them into loyal readers and even customers. You have an opportunity to build a rapport and it goes a long way in ‘humanizing’ your brand. Be sure to use these tips to write a compelling about me page that converts.

Understand who you’re writing for: Decide your tone and voice accordingly. It is okay to write in first person or third person. I personally prefer 1st person. It establishes a bond with your reader.
Introduce yourself under 20 words: That’s sharp but powerful. Greet them and hold their attention with the most impressive, simple and latest details about you in one or two sentences. Consider this as a decision making opening for them to go read further or not.
Introduce Your Blog to Set Expectations: Think of a punchy statement to grab attention and tell your visitors to what to expect on your blog. If they have landed from a blog link or social media sites, they are already interested in learning more about you. Tell them what they will get reading your posts. Talk about the purpose of your blog or hit a story what made you start your blog at first place.
Share How You can Help: Talk about the problems you can solve. Mention one or two case studies if you want, but make it look realistic with the combination of challenges you have faced and your share of bad luck or failures.
Don’t make it look like your autobiography, as a detailed history is not necessarily going to add to your brand’s image. Know your audience first, identify your unique selling points, and then create a story that would interest them.
Add a review or testimonial from someone or even readers: Your new readers will connect faster with other readers and their experiences on your blog. Consider putting a few testimonials or reviews.
Encourage them to Follow You on Social Media: When you have impressed your readers with all the info on your about me page, it is easier to convince them to follow you on different social media platforms. Be sure that you’re inviting them to networks where you are active, too. Use that opportunity to strengthen relationship with your visitors.
Add a life reel: Who doesn’t connect with pictures and videos? Show some and play one.
Have a contact form: I was more likely to connect with blogs I loved when they had a contact form instead of just mentioning their email ids. It’s an effort to copy the email id and compose an email, let’s accept it. Try a short and compact contact form and see the difference.

Write a Killer Short Bio

Your short bio is a little blurb that may appear at the end of your blog posts or may occupy a place in sidebar with your photo. Take the bio as the tiny version of your about me page. You can use this bio on your social networks. This is the bio that gets attention from prospects, event organizers and picky readers. Here are the tips you should follow to make your short bio count.

Consider using first person when writing your short bio because it feels much more personal and help you connect quickly with your reader on a more intimate level. It also allows you to write in a conversation tone and makes your unique voice felt.
Use the space to guide your readers to something more useful. You can mention your upcoming event or book or one of your most in demand services or just direct them to your about me page to read more about you.
Focus on highlighting the real purpose of your blog. Come straight to the point without wasting any words.

Your Offering Page

There is no prize for guessing the importance of putting together a compelling and promising offering page. After all, it is your money page and you need to present your products and services in the most attractive and convincing manner. The following tips will help simplify the task of creating a good offering page:

Keep it as clear as possible so your visitors know exactly what you’re offering. Your blog primarily educates and informs your audience but it will eventually bring leads and money opportunities only when your readers clearly understand on what level you can help them. Even the most informative blog will fail to make a difference if the visitors have to spend a lot of time figuring out the types of products or service you offer.
Use simple names for your products and services to help your visitors get an idea quickly.
Pay attention to writing clear and concise product/service descriptions. The ultimate goal should be to enhance the user experience and make it easier for the visitors to get what they want. Share the benefits of the products and highlight important features.
Show the outcome of your services in points. Help them visualize the results.
Write 5-6 FAQs about your offering. It works well addressing the basic objections.
Use keywords to make your place in search engines.
Take advantage of visuals to make your page more interactive. Use flow charts or process infographics to explain how things will work. The right use of visuals helps break the barrier that keeps your visitors from converting.
Share the benefits of your products and services, but do not forget to make it real by suggesting certain situations when your offerings may not be that suitable for them. Make them feel as if you’re on their side and they will start trusting you more.
Be sure to share some success stories and add credibility to your page and brand by offering people’s reviews. Make it clear to your visitors that your products and services have helped others in the past and they can expect the same.
Tell them how the whole process works. Share how they can place their orders and what to expect next. A complete picture of how they can order and receive what they want will take guesswork and uncertainty out of the picture.

Contact Page

The most ordinary page! But putting some thoughts together can make your contact page convert more than you think. Other than sharing your email id and a contact form, this is what you can do to shine.

Write a personalized text to welcome the reader on your contact page. Remember that the user’s intent is high and personalizing your contact page will add to the intent.
Ask them if they prefer the response on email or call.
Give them an idea of response time after they have left their message.
Send a personalized autoresponder to their email so they receive the confirmation after sending message.
Invite them to connect on your social pages.

Contribution Page

When you have set up a blog, you need to be consistent in posting useful and interesting content. And you don’t have to be the only person to publish on your blog. Encouraging guest contributions by other reputed professionals from your industry will bring a different style, perspective, knowledge and of course variety of content. No doubt, it will add more authority to your blog.

If you’re up for it, create a contribution page that highlights all the requirements a contributor has to fulfill before getting their content published on your blog. Tell them about the quality standard you expect, and do not forget to explain the process they have to go through to send their post to you.

This is my second post in which I am live blogging from the New Communications Forum “Blog University,” here in Napa, California.

Right now Alice Marshall of Technoflak is leading a session on “How to Pitch Bloggers.”

She’s talking about how PR and corporate marketing professionals should or should not approach individual bloggers to promote products and companies.

Alice points out these important points to remember about pitching bloggers:

To identify the blogs which are influential in your target space, check services such as Technorati and Bloglines to discover which blogs are discussing your clients or your company, and its products and markets. Then visit those blogs and check their blogrolls and post links to find other related-topic blogs.
The time to develop relationships with influential bloggers is before you need to make a specific pitch. Spend some time commenting on blogs that are key to your client’s or company’s markets, so that you are not unknown when a need to make a pitch arises.
Personalize your message to the blogger. Phrase your email something like this: “I read your post about such-and-such, and it reminded me of this point….”

The group discussion also turned to the topic of paying bloggers to write about particular products and companies. The general consensus: any paid relationship needs to be made obvious and open. How to go about disclosing that relationship is subject to somewhat more difference of opinion, but most people seemed to agree on this basic point: transparency is key.
