Third of Global Consumers Open to Google, Amazon Banking: Accenture Survey

Roughly one in three banking and insurance customers globally would consider switching their accounts to Google, Amazon or Facebook if the Silicon Valley giants offered financial services, according to a new survey on Wednesday.

The survey, conducted by consulting firm Accenture, found that among 32,715 people polled in 18 countries there was broad consumer demand for banks and insurance companies to use robo-advisory services, or software propelled by artificial intelligence or less human intervention.

In Brazil, 50 percent of respondents said they would be willing to switch their personal accounts. In Indonesia and Italy, 47 percent and 42 percent of respondents, respectively, said they would switch accounts.

But according to the survey, if the tech titans offered those services, 31 percent of global respondents would switch to Google, Amazon or Facebook for banking, and 29 percent would switch for insurance.

Already a trend in the wealth management industry, Wall Street banks and investment firms are increasingly building or buying so-called robo-advisers to provide automated investment advice through web-based platforms at a lower cost than traditional financial advisers.

“(Google, Amazon, Facebook) are setting the standards in terms of customer experience and personalisation,” said Piercarlo Gera, senior managing director at Accenture Financial Services. Consumers look at banks and see a gap, Gera said.

Google, Amazon and Facebook did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

While none of these companies currently offer bank or insurance products, Google and Facebook allow users to send payments to their contacts online. Amazon has a limited service providing loans to small sellers that it selects.

It is unclear whether regulations in any of the countries in which the survey was conducted would allow these companies to have banking or insurance licenses.

The survey was conducted from May to June in 2016, and respondents were asked to answer questions online.

When it came to specific services, more than 7 in 10 respondents said they would use robo-advice to figure out what kind of bank account to open, and nearly 4 out of 5 said they would use it for investing.

But 68 percent of respondents said they did not want a robot handling customer complaints, and 61 percent said they would prefer a human over an automated system for advice about complex products like mortgages.

Accenture launched a partnership with Google in September for cloud, mobility and analytic strategies to clients in retail, healthcare, consumer products, energy and finance.

Chinese Internet colossus Baidu is out to make a splash with ‘Little Fish,’ a family robot that is a voice-controlled virtual valet akin to Amazon Echo or Google Home.

Baidu showed off “Little Fish,” a translation of its Chinese name “Xiaoyu Zaijia,” on Thursday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas ahead of its release in China later this year.

“I think 2017 will be the year of conversational computing,” Baidu chief scientist Andrew Ng said while demonstrating Little Fish for AFP behind closed doors at the show.

“We see a clear path of conversational computers changing everything.”

Using voice to interact with computers that are able to essentially learn from experience was among the hot trends at CES. Arrays of device makers added digital aide capabilities with the help of Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant technology.

Unlike “faceless” Amazon Alexa or Google Home devices that rely on people asking for information or controlling devices by speaking, Little Fish also features a touch-screen on top of its orb-shaped base.

A camera on top tracks faces, and the screen swivels to keep facing a speaker.

“Speech is the fastest way for you to communicate with a computer, but a screen is a very fast way for a machine to communicate back to you,” Ng said.

For example, it would be quicker to glance at a requested list of top restaurants from Yelp than it would be to listen to the computer read all the names and descriptions, he said.

Transformative
Little Fish uses Baidu’s operating system DuerOS, which is already employed by other devices in China, such as set-top TV boxes that can switch channels by voice command or figure out names of actors on screen when asked.

The bigger vision is to build DuerOS into a broad range of gadgets that tap into Baidu’s Internet capabilities for search, food delivery, online commerce and more.

“If this takes off, I am not worried about how we will make money,” Ng said when asked about revenue plans.

“It will transform how you use devices in your home. There are plenty of business models.”

Little Fish, a second-generation device, will be released in China at a price yet to be disclosed, according to Baidu.

Baidu partnered with hardware firm Ainemo to build it.

“We believe family robots will be the next big category that will be a member of everybody’s home,” Ainemo chief executive and founder Chenfeng Song said in a release.

AI taking hold
Artificial intelligence, or AI, is getting a foothold in homes, with developers feverishly adding “skills” to Amazon Echo speakers infused with Alexa.

Google, meanwhile, is using its AI prowess in Android smartphones, messaging software, and a vase-sized Home digital assistant.

The home hubs, sometimes referred to as smart speakers, fetch content or answers from the internet, and can act as remote controls for other devices in houses.

“We are moving technologies beyond the smartphone,” said Shawn DuBravac, chief economist at the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) that organizes CES.

“Ultimately, vocal computing is replacing the (screen).”

Chinese tech giant Huawei said at CES that it is adding Amazon’s Alexa to its flagship smartphone for its US launch.

China-based Lenovo announced it was launching a smart home assistant powered by Alexa, joining the growing roster of contenders in the market for voice-activated devices.

“In the smart home, voice is clearly important,” DuBravac said.

“We are seeing that play out at CES.”

He expected voice technology to quickly improve, within years perhaps even being able to recognize speakers so accurately it could be used for biometric security, or simple parental override of Internet use by offspring.

“I know that in my home with my boys, I would like Alexa to recognize my voice as the ruler of the coop,” DuBravac quipped.

While digital assistant technology is being built into televisions, appliances and more, hub devices such as Alexa will be key to voice-controlled computing, according to the economist.

NPD analyst Ben Arnold said at CES that he is “bullish on everything voice and AI,” with the technologies eventually “pollenating” devices so thoroughly they essentially become home operating systems.

LG's Hub Robot to Take on Amazon Echo, Google Home Personal Assistants at CES 2017

LG has announced that the company will be showcasing its advanced robot technologies at CES 2017, including one that looks set to take on Amazon’s Echo and Google’s Home. The company says that its robotic lineup will be able to navigate complex environments and find out the most efficient route to complete the tasks allocated to them by making use of powerful analytical processing capabilities. Also unveiled ahead of CES were new UHD televisions with the company’s Nano Cell LCD tech.

The company’s robot collection will be unveiled on Wednesday at CES and includes the Hub Robot, which will work both as a smart home gateway and a personal assistant for the users, the company said in its release. This sounds a lot like the Amazon Echo speaker powered by the Alexa voice-based virtual assistant, and Google Home speaker powered by the Google Assistant.

Another robot from LG’s lineup will demonstrate use in gardening while other models that will be on display have been designed for “commercial use in public spaces such as airports and hotels to help improve the traveller’s experience,” the company said in the release.
Ahead of its CES 2017 event, the company has also announced its Super UHD lineup of LCD TVs featuring Nano Cell technology, which helps them produce more accurate colours than other television sets, as per company’s claims. All three new models from the lineup, namely SJ9500, SJ8500, and SJ8000, feature Active HDR with Dolby Vision that allows support for multiple HDR formats.

The new smart TV models from Super UHD lineup run on LG’s webOS platform and come with a thin and “aesthetically pleasing” design, the company said in its release. The company says that the newly launched TV models have powerful audio capabilities. The use of Nano Cell technology is said to reduces the on-screen light glow to maintain picture quality even when these TVs are surrounded by intense ambient lighting.

“Nano Cell LCD displays offer a technological advantage by employing uniformly-sized particles approximately one nanometre in diameter to create more subtle, accurate colours that can be viewed from wider angles than other TVs,” LG said regarding the Nano Cell technology used in the TVs. LG says that the absorption of surplus light wavelengths allows Nano Cell tech to distinguish between colours with precision.

The company further claims that the use of the Nano Cell LCD technology dramatically reduces instances of colour fading, image instability and other colour degradation issues.

LG partnered with legendary motion picture technology firm – Technicolor – to work on the colour technologies used by the new TVs in order to try and accurately recreate the “artistic intent of content creators,” the company said.

“Our 2017 SUPER UHD TV lineup with LG’s proprietary Nano Cell technology is a breakthrough in display technology that advances the LCD TV viewing experience to a level unlike any other,” Brian Kwon, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company, was quoted as saying in the release.

Apart from the new TV models, LG has also announced that it will be unveiling a new generation of its CordZero premium vacuum cleaners. In its press release, the company said that the use of its Aero Science vacuum technology and improved CordZero Handstick and CordZero Canister will help users experience a “new level of cleaning.”

The company claims that the use of Smart Inverter Motor, which at 115,000 RPM is said to spin 16 times faster than an aeroplane engine, provides the new CordZero Handstick with top class sunction power.

In the weeks leading up to CES 2017, LG already unveiled several products that the company will be showcasing at the Las Vegas trade show. These products include company’s ProBeam laser projector, LG K-Series smartphones, its PJ9 Levitating Bluetooth speaker, Tone Studio and Tone Free wireless audio products, and deep learning-based home appliances.

Microsoft Partners Intel for Project Evo; Outlines Hardware Plans to Complete With Amazon Echo, Google Home

Microsoft is reportedly working on a “Home Hub” feature for Windows 10 to allow users to perform various functions using voice commands. This feature is positioned to rival devices like Amazon Echoand Google Home. In the meanwhile, Microsoft has partnered with Intel for ‘Project Evo’, what appears to be a move to lay the hardware groundwork for this feature and allow device makers to incorporate Home Hub in a tablet laptop, or even a PC.

In a blog post, Terry Myerson, Executive Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group at Microsoft, detailed the areas the companies would be working together on. These include far-field speech communications (allowing users to use Cortana across the room), security capabilities to protect devices from malware and hacking threats (including biometric authentication), mixed reality experiences, and gaming innovations.

Microsoft looks to give the device makers the freedom to incorporate the latest artificial intelligence with Cortana in the hardware that they desire. “Customers are device creators. There’s a lot of enthusiasm for wake on voice, devices with far-field voice capabilities, devices with small screens, large screens, and no screens at all,” explained Myerson, in an interview with The Verge.

Microsoft doesn’t intend to make a hardware product similar to the Amazon Echo or Google Home, but just provide its device partners with the software ability to compete with them. This Home Hub feature should be able to listen to voice-based commands and perform tasks, support wake on voice and far-field speech communications, just like Amazon and Google’s AI assistants. This smart speaker’s feature will work on PCs, 2-in-1s, all-in-ones, and even tablets.

“From a platform perspective, our goal is to build this platform that provides a set of silicon options for these device creators, that allows them to choose the screen sizes they’re choosing, and allows them to decide whether they want touch or not, support pen or not. So they can pursue their own vision of what the ideal device is,” Myerson told the publication.

The Home Hub feature is not expected to launch before late next year. It is supposed to extend to Android and iOS devices as well, via the Cortana app. Microsoft is reportedly already in talks with hardware partners like Lenovo and HP to product Home Hub specific hardware. The new hardware that’s fully compatible with Home Hub may include light and motion sensors as well, that switches off the device when no-one is in the room.

Finally, in what definitely seems like a step towards Home Hub, the latest Insider Preview build of Windows 10 (build 14986) brings ability to use Cortana to switch off your PC via voice commands. The Verge reports that Cortana can also be used to put the PC to sleep, or restart it, apart from locking the PC, and changing system volume. The update let Cortana change tracks in some music streaming services like iHeartRadio and TuneInRadio, when the PC is locked. Two other Cortana based features are the ability to ask which song is playing, and bring up a view optimised for distance viewing if users say “Hey Cortana” when the PC is idle for more than 10 seconds.

Amazon Go Grocery Store Without Checkout Lines Opens in Seattle

Amazon.com Inc said on Monday it has opened a brick-and-mortar grocery store in Seattle without lines or checkout counters, kicking off new competition with supermarket chains.

Amazon Go, the online shopping company’s new 1,800-square-foot (167-square-meter) store, uses sensors to detect what items shoppers have picked off the shelves and sends a bill to their Amazon accounts if they do not replace them.

The store marks Amazon’s latest push into groceries, one of the biggest retail categories it has yet to master. The company currently delivers produce and groceries to homes through its AmazonFresh service.

“It’s a great recognition that their e-commerce model doesn’t work for every product,” said analyst Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research, noting that physical stores would complement AmazonFresh.

“If there were hundreds of these stores around the country, it would be a huge threat” to supermarket chains, he said.
The S&P 1500 food retail index, which includes Kroger Co, Whole Foods Market Inc and other companies, was down 0.5 percent at the close. Shares of Amazon closed up about 2.6 percent.

Amazon Go is available now for employees of the company and is expected to be open to the public early next year, Amazon said.

If tests are successful, Amazon plans to open more than 2,000 grocery stores, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing sources. The company is considering other store formats, including one that would let drivers pick up goods at the curbside, the report said.

Amazon declined to comment on the report.

“The checkout lines are always the most inefficient parts of the store experience,” said Neil Saunders, managing director of retail research firm Conlumino. “Not only would you save a lot on labour costs, you actually would make the process much quicker for consumers and much more satisfying.”

Still, the grab-and-go experience would take getting used to, he said.

Some people may “feel like they stole” an item, Saunders said.

Apart from groceries such as bread and milk, the store also offers ready-to-eat meals made fresh by on-site chefs and local kitchens and bakeries, Amazon said.

That would make Amazon Go a potential competitor to fast-casual dining chains like Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc as well.

Amazon Go is not the first physical store for the e-commerce company to open.

It has a book store in Seattle, as well as pop-ups at malls where it displays Amazon devices such as the Kindle.

Amazon Launchpad Launched in India; Showcases Products by Indian Startups

Amazon had introduced its Launchpad initiative in the US last year. At that point, the retail giant had partnered with over 25 crowdfunding platforms like Indiegogo, apart from venture capital firms, helping startups offer their products to the world on a platform as well-known as Amazon. The company would be in charge of inventory and order fulfilment, as well as customer service to an extent. Now, Amazon has launched the platform in India, however, in a slightly different form.

The US-based retail giant has partnered with Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion’s (DIPP) Start Up India initiative, as well as NASSCOM 10,000 Startups, and Indian Angel Network (IAN), amongst others accelerator and incubator programmes, with the aim of identifying and enrolling startups that can showcase their products on Amazon Launchpad. It appears Amazon may need to work on its filtering to ensure only products by Indian startups are visible.

The company in a press statement said that the Amazon Launchpad store in India features over 400 products ranging from wearable technology, smart homes, food and beverage, health monitoring, educational toys and more. The statement adds that even before its launch, over 25 Indian startups like Witworks, Leaf Wearables, Ducere Technologies, Seventh Sense Technologies have already joined the programme.

Startups that are associated with the Amazon Launchpad programme in India will get benefits like brand development (such as custom product pages, a dedicated Q&A section), customer reach (on-site merchandise placements, personalized recommendations, external program PR, and access to advertising), fulfilment along with customer service, and finally global expansion. The company added that when the Indian startups are ready to reach global customers, Amazon will help them expand to nine Amazon marketplaces across the world.

Amazon adds that startups interested in joining the Amazon Launchpad programme will need to have a “promising, unique and ready-to-ship product” that is compliant with Amazon policies. The Startup Application Form can be accessed on the dedicated Launchpad page.

“By bringing Amazon Launchpad to India, we encourage innovation from the startup community. India has great minds which invent amazing products and we will support their growth by helping customers discover their new products not just in India but other countries around the world,” said Amit Agarwal, Vice President and Country Head, Amazon India.

“Through this programme, small entrepreneurs and innovators can go leverage the Amazon platform to increase the scale of their businesses and even get easy access to global markets,” noted Jason Feldman, Director Global Innovations, Amazon.

Amazon Prime Video Is Coming to Over 200 Countries Including India in December

Ever since the launch of Amazon Prime in India in July, a lot of us have been waiting eagerly for the launch of Amazon Prime Video. Unfortunately, Amazon has only said that Prime Video is “coming soon”. Now, the company has finally given a timeframe for the launch of Prime Video in India, though it stopped short of giving an exact date.

In a tweet by The Grand Tour team, which was shared by the verified Amazon Prime Video India account, the former Top Gear stars revealed that Amazon Prime Video isn’t just rolling out in India, but will soon be available in over 200 countries.

This is somewhat reminiscent of the launch of Netflix in January, when it announced its entry into India and 129 other countries. It would seem that Amazon also decided that rather than spreading its service piecemeal through the world, it makes more sense to launch everything at once. Amazon Prime subscriptions are still available at Rs. 499 per year, or under Rs. 50 per month. With this, you get free shipping and special deals and discounts, which is already a pretty good offer, but in the rest of the world, you also get bundled extras such as Prime Video, and Prime Reading, which gives unlimited reading from a rotating selection of Kindle e-books.

Although Amazon has not officially confirmed that Prime Video will be included in this price in India, since that happens everywhere else, you can be pretty sure India will be no different. This means you’ll get unlimited video viewing, with in-demand local content, and Amazon’s award winning original shows at monthly cost that’s less than a single cup of coffee.
Amazon Prime Video has the potential to be a really big disruptor in the Indian market. The company has made a lot of deals with Indian movie studios, and it’s in the race for the rights to air IPL matches. Unlike Netflix, which is targeting the most affluent users, Amazon’s pricing and content strategy makes it a product that could actually build a mass audience.
