10 Top Principles of Effective Web Design

Web designing is something that works like a ‘memorable impression’ on everyone who visits a particular website. A good website can not only increase client base, but can also help maintain the existing customers for that website. The kind of views that a website can get depends a lot on the kind of design that it has. And having a good web design can be probably the best investment for a website.

Web designing is a task that works on certain principles. And these principles, if applied well can help spread the website’s services to not just one but millions of other websites all across the world. Therefore, here’s a list of principles that can help one understand effective web designing:

  1. The objective of the website:The main objective of a website is basically to fulfil the requirements of what the visitor wants to see. The purpose of it can be different for different people. Thus, simply put, it should be able to serve everyone’s purpose.
  2. Communication: This is by far the most important thing that the audience looks for in the website. What they’re looking for, should basically be able to fulfil their understanding and should be easily communicated. If, for example, one is looking for Press Release Distributions that should clearly be mentioned on the website along with a little information about what it can do.
  3. Font: One of the most basic things that a client would ever notice is how well they’re able to read the text. Mostly, fonts that are most clearly visible are Arial and Veranda. This is very important for online marketing.

4.Page Colour:The next thing that just catches our eyes is the colour of the page. Usually, if the background is too bright, the text doesn’t seem very attractive and one simply loses out on all the information he/she wanted to gather. Thus, the colour of the page plays a huge role.

  1. Images and Illustrations: People understand better through pictures and illustrations. They’re able to understand the practicality of something only if they’re able to identify what they’re able to understand. And so, placing pictures on websites is a great marketing idea.
  2. Tracking and Navigating: This tool basically helps the clients understand how it is like to look around in the website, that is, go to other links and documents mentioned there. A good navigation tool always makes it simple for the client to surf through the website and get information easily.
  3. Placement: The content present on the website not only gives out information, but also has a huge task of being appealing. If there’s information that is placed vaguely, all over the page, it has the tendency of confusing the client and thus, they eventually lose interest. Placement is thus important.
  4. Reading Pattern: There’s mostly a behaviour that is seen when one is reading on a particular website. According to research, people usually follow the ‘F’ pattern. This means that they mostly read what is mentioned at the top left of the screen and prefer reading the left side of the page. This should always be considered while designing a good webpage.
  5. Waiting to load: No one likes waiting for websites to load. It is important that websites work on keeping a small size for pictures and scaling down their content on the website by changing their HTML language and Java Scripts.
  6. Mobile friendly: And lastly, all websites should be mobile friendly since people find it impractical to carry laptops everywhere, they surf on their phones. And thus, websites should be flexible and should be able to work well on mobiles.

Vivo Y51L review: Great design but poor display

The market for mobile devices under the sub-Rs 12,000 bracket is on a constant rise. Considering the fact their innards are so powerful, they can even give their flagship counterparts a mid life crisis. The Vivo Y51L is another one of those trying to capitalise in the ever growing budget category. Apparently it’s the company’s first smartphone manufactured outside of China. In fact, it is assembled at its Greater Noida plant in India.

Currently priced at around Rs 11,000 on Amazon India, the device comes with a standard set of specifications you would expect from a budget smartphone. There are quite a few sub Rs 12,000 smartphones available that more or less take care of your usual requirements such as an elegant looking design, decent graphics for gaming and movies, good music experience and of course no hiccups while switching between apps. Lets see how many of the above parameters did the Vivo Y51L manage to pull-off.

Design

Out of the box, it feels like a pretty good looking device with rather unique design aesthetics. It flaunts a slim body with modulated metal strips running along the sides. The cut outs for the volume rockers and power button are done with absolute precision. The back of the phone gets a neat glossy plastic finish which adds to its overall appearance. The company done a good job when it comes to the smartphone’s design aesthetics, though feels a tad heavy in the hand probably because of the use metal on the edges.

Display

On the front is a 5-inch display which is apparently one of its glaring shortcomings. Its a 5-inch LCD display with a pretty sluggish 960x540p resolution, which makes reading and multimedia experience on the smartphone a bit flat and dull. It will probably suffice for casual users who are not really finicky about displays. Though at a price point where rivals like the Redmi Note 3 and LeEco 1S are offering Full HD displays or the Moto G Turbo which gets the standard HD display, the Vivo Y51L’s display is light years behind.

Performance

Coming to its processing power and multitasking performance, the smartphone performed really well during the time I spent with it. It did a fairly decent job at multitasking, even the gaming performance was pretty good. It could even play high-end games like Mortal Kombat X without any major lags or stutters that too without any heating issues, which is quite a rarity these days. Even the software performance is quite snappy featuring some rather unique design changes which can be a bit confusing initially. For instance, the drop down menu only displays the Notifications panel and not the Settings menu. Instead, you will have to slide upwards from the lower edge of the screen to access the settings panel. Though once you get used to it, it does offer some rather nifty features such as long screen shot, which allows you take the screenshot of the entire page and not just the portion visible on the screen, implying you can easily take a screen grab of your entire Twitter timeline in one go.

Camera

Coming on to the cameras, the 8-megapixel camera on the back is quite a hit and miss as the end result in well lit conditions turns out quite satisfactory for the most part. Though at times it seems the camera lacks consistency as images appear rather blurry, especially in low light conditions. However, the 5-megapixel camera on the front surprisingly turned out to be quite a delight as it is capable of belting out some pretty good selfies.

Battery and connectivity

The 2,350 mAh non removable battery also churns out a rather satisfactory performance for the everyday user, as it can easily fetch you over a day of moderate usage.

It also offers rather solid storage options such as OTG support, and comes with 16 GB of built-in storage expandable upto 128GB via microSD slot. In terms of connectivity, the VivoY51L comes with dual-SIM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G along with 4G LTE support.

To buy or not to buy

Barring the smartphone’s lame screen resolution, the Vivo Y51L offers a pretty decent all round performance and definitely score some points in terms of its unique design aesthetics. Though it still lags way behind the competition in the given price range. Especially from the likes of the Le Eco 1S and the Redmi Note 3 who feature more advanced innards and essentially offer a much better overall package at the same price point.

Hence, if you’re looking for a smartphone that’s easily available for purchase without the annoying flash sales model, the Vivo Y51L is a pretty decent buy, unless a good display is one of the core ingredient of your daily smartphone usage.

For years, human-machine interfaces (HMI) have been weighed down by limitations that left designs feeling more functional than fantastic. But a new day is dawning.
Real-time technology has opened up a path that turns screens into a source of wonder that can radically alter how drivers feel about their cars via interactive 3D graphics.

If you’ve been following our HMI initiative, you know Epic Games is partnering with automotive manufacturers on this shift, as we all work to bring better functionality and design to in-vehicle displays. And that mission is already starting to bear fruit.

The Rivian R1T is now rolling off assembly lines with an Unreal Engine-powered driver display, and in 2022, the GMC Hummer EV will hit the streets with Unreal Engine in its digital cockpit. The future is in motion, and from what we are hearing, more is on the way.

Introducing the Unreal Engine HMI Design Challenge

Across the globe, automotive design teams are asking: “How can we use HMI design to make the driver feel adventurous, or luxurious, or sporty?” So we thought we’d build that question into a challenge.

This January, HMI designers of all stripes can show the world how their concepts buck traditional designs during the “Unreal Engine HMI Design Challenge.” Created in partnership with Car Design News (CDN), this competition asks designers to rethink what’s possible with real-time technology.

Want to show drivers something they’ve never seen before? Depict visual information in a more elegant way? Or get your work in front of design leads from some of the world’s most innovative automotive manufacturers? Then this competition is for you.

Prizes

Grand prize winners will get to develop their concepts further with an expert judge, before seeing their design featured in the 9th edition of Car Design Review, CDN’s annual print publication that is read throughout the automotive industry.

Timing

We are accepting submissions from January 26, 2022 – April 1, 2022, and will announce the winners in April.

What the judges are looking for

Our panel of judges are drawn from major companies like GM, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Nissan, Hyundai, Human Horizons, Ather Energy, TVS Motor Company, Triumph, Rivian, and Toyota, and will be looking mainly at your creativity—not features sets and implementation. Since design language is the focus, the judges want to see how well you’ve incorporated a polished HMI that transports passengers and evokes a feeling of adventure, luxury, or sport.

How to enter

Anyone is eligible to submit their HMI concepts regardless of your background. If you don’t have any experience designing HMI systems, that’s okay! Whether you’re an architect, artist or gameplay designer by trade, this is your chance to get your concepts noticed by major manufacturers.

That said, while we encourage participants from diverse backgrounds, we also want to make sure all entries are judged on an equal playing field. So to that end, all participants will be required to use the same design template for the contest.

Huawei Nova 4 Bezel-Less Design Said to Be Shown Off in Live Stream, Concept Render Released

Huawei has recently been rumoured to be working on its first-ever smartphone with an all-screen design and a hole to fit in the selfie camera, something the company has itself also teased for a December launch. Now, reports claim this may be the Huawei Nova 4, a smartphone that was allegedly shown off by Huawei itself at an event in China during a livestream. Additionally, an alleged promotional poster has been spotted that teases the all-screen design. Lastly, a supposed press render of the Huawei Nova 4 is out, showing a similar design. Let’s delve into the details.

First off, a report by German blog WinFuture.de claims that the front of the Huawei Nova 4 was teased by Huawei on stage at the occasion of the 18th large-scale birthday celebrations of popular Chinese singer Jackson Yee. The phone was showcased for quite some time with the main camera focusing on a close-up shot of the smartphone. The back of the phone was not expectedly revealed in the video, in order to show the major display design change. The live stream can be played back on Iqiyi; the phone is shown from the 35:30 time stamp onwards.

To recall, earlier this week Huawei released a teaser for a December launch of a smartphone with an all-screen display and a small hole on the top left for the selfie camera, and possibly other sensors. The tweet also claims that there will be a battle between Huawei and Samsung (Galaxy A8s) to be the world’s first brand to unveil a smartphone with this kind of a display design.

Lastly, another tipster Ben Geskin, with username @VenyaGeskin1, has published what is seemingly a concept render of the upcoming Huawei Nova 4 with the same design as seen in the video and other leaks. Do note that this is not an official press render, and instead one created on the basis of leaks that have emerged in the past few days.

Moto E5, Moto E5 Plus Design Tipped in New Image Leak

Motorola is all set to launch its next smartphones in the E-series and G-series this year. While there has been a lot of hype created around this week’s launch event of Moto G6, Moto G6 Play, and Moto G6 Plus, the Lenovo-owned company may also be ready with two other smartphones – Moto E5 and Moto E5 Plus. Rumours surrounding the two handsets have been doing the rounds for a while now, but now we have a good look at what they might look like.

The Moto E5 and Moto E5 Plus, the successors to Motorola’s Moto E4 handsets might be just around the corner as images of both the handsets have been leaked, including a Gold colour variant. Noted tipster Roland Quandt from WinFuture has posteda series of images of both Moto E5 and Moto E5 Plus. Notably, specifications of the smartphones have not been revealed in the latest leak. However, the images provide some insight into what to expect from the handsets.

As per the leaked images, the Moto E5 appears to come with only one camera at the back but the Moto E5 Plus seems to ship with a dual-camera setup with LED flash. The smartphones have included the 3.5mm headphone jack at the top of the handset. While we are not sure what material is the phones made of, but the Moto E5 smartphones appear to come in Gold, Black, and Grey coloured variants. The design is similar to another leaked render that was reported last month.

Exactly what specifications we will find inside the smartphones remain unclear as of now. The Plus version of the Moto E5 may sport a bigger display and battery, but we do not know for sure. The Moto E4 Plus packed a bigger battery than the Moto E4.

From what we know so far, the Moto E5 Plus was recently spotted on a benchmark site that revealed some of the specifications of the smartphone. It is expected to include 3GB of RAM, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC (MSM8937) clocked at 1.4GHz, and Android 8.0.0 Oreo. Previous reports had also suggested that the Moto E5 Plus will sport a 5.8-inch HD+ (720×1440 pixels) display and dual rear camera setup with a 16-megapixel primary sensor and an 8-megapixel secondary sensor, coupled with f/1.75 and f/2.0 aperture respectively.

While not much is known about the Moto E5, another variant is also expected in the lineup – Moto E4 Play. We will have to wait for the launch event to know more details about the upcoming smartphones.

Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS With Triple Camera Setup, 512GB Storage Launched: Price, Specifications

Huawei on Tuesday launched the P20 and P20 Proflagships at an event in Paris, France. The Chinese telecommunications giant also launched the Porsche Design Mate RS at the event, continuing its partnership with the luxury design house. The Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS is nearly identical to the Huawei P20 Pro in terms of specifications, but it has some major design differences, with the most prominent being the removal of the notch on the display, and the centre placement of the rear triple setup – in line with the fingerprint sensor. Other major highlights of the smartphone is that the top variant sports 512GB of inbuilt storage, and that there is a under-display fingerprint sensor.

Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS price, availability

The Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS price starts at EUR 1,695 (roughly Rs. 1,36,400) for the 256GB inbuilt storage variant and goes up to EUR 2,095 (roughly Rs. 1,68,600) for the 512GB inbuilt storage variant. Both variants will go on sale in select regions from April 12. It will be available in Black and Red colour variants, with the latter however exclusive to China.

The dual-SIM (Nano) Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS runs EMUI 8.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. It is powered by the octa-core Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 970 SoC (four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.36GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz) complete with a dedicated NPU (neural processing unit). This gives it the same AI processing chops as the P20 and P20 Pro. The Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS has 6GB of RAM.

The Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS sports a 6-inch QHD+ (1440×2880 pixels) OLED FullView display in an 18:9 display aspect ratio. It is IP67 rated for dust and water resistance.

Just like the Huawei P20 Pro, the Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS has a triple rear camera setup. The topmost lens bears an 8-megapixel sensor with 3x optical zoom thanks to its Leica telephoto lens (VARIO-SUMMILUX-H 1:1.6-2.4/27-80ASPH). The second, bears a 40-megapixel RGB 1/1.7-inch sensor, while the third bears a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor. Between the larger lenses, lie a laser transmitter and receiver, for quicker autofocus, as well as a Leica colour temperature sensor. The camera has a light sensitivity up to ISO 102400 – the same as the Canon 5D Mark IV, the company says. The company is also touting the most powerful zoom on a smartphone, as apart from 3x optical zoom, the Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS offers 5x lossless hybrid zoom, and 10x digital zoom. It sports a 24.8-megapixel fixed focus front camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

The Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS bears a 360-degree Face Unlock feature, said to unlock the smartphones in as little as 0.6 seconds. It however forgoes the home button with its ‘edgeless fingerprint’ support, and instead, moves the fingerprint sensor to the rear panel. Notably though, there is an under display fingerprint as well – this sensor also wakes up the smartphone if you hover a finger over it. The smartphone measures 152.9×72.5×8.5mm and weighs about 183 grams. It sports the same 4000mAh battery as the P20 Pro, with Huawei SuperCharge fast charging support. It also supports wireless charging.

Just days after reports spotted a compact phone from HMD Global on US certification site FCC, reputed tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks) has outed the alleged press renders of the Nokia 1. The photos show a smartphone with a compact form factor, apparently meant for the budget segment. Additionally, Blass also posted renders of what is supposed to be the rumoured Nokia 7 Plus. The Nokia 1 is seen to sport a single rear camera, while the Nokia 7 Plus is shown to have a dual rear camera setup.

This seems to be the first instance where we have seen renders of the rumoured Nokia 1 from a credible source. The curved body design in the Nokia 1 renders is, however, unlike the leak we saw last week. Apart from that, the smartphone is seen in two unnamed colour variants.

Previous rumours of the Nokia 1 suggest the entry-level smartphone will sport an HD (720×1280 pixels) IPS display along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of inbuilt storage.

Blass also tweeted two images of the upcoming Nokia 7 Plus. The images reveal that the phone will run Google’s Android One out-of-the-box. Additionally, the renders show the Nokia 7 Plus will sport a dual rear camera setup with Zeiss lens and dual LED flash. There is also a fingerprint sensor below the camera module.

Rumours around the Nokia 7 Plus suggest the mid-range smartphone will be announced at MWC 2018. Reports claim the Nokia 7 Plus is expected to sport a 6-inch, 18:9 display, and a dual 12-megapixel + 13-megapixel camera sensor module on the back. The phone might come with 4GB of RAM and 64GB inbuilt storage.

While the tech world is anticipating the next Android version at Google’s I/O 2018, a new report has surfaced that reveals some of the next-generation features that are heading to the new Android iteration. The new version, which is so far in the headlines as Android P, is said to support smartphones with a “notch”, similar to the iPhone X. It is also reported to have a tight Google Assistant integration as well as support for new designs, including multiple screens and foldable display panels, to ultimately convince several iPhone users to switch to Android devices. All this contrasts the next iOS version that is already reported to favour performance and stability instead of offering some major new features.

Google is building an overhaul of its Android platform to start supporting hardware notch natively to compress cameras and other sensors in a single cutout design, reports Bloomberg. The notch design received market focus with the arrival of the iPhone X last year, though Android co-founder Andy Rubin brought the Essential Phone even before the iPhone X launch, particularly in May last year, with a small notch for the front-facing camera sensor. Following the latest iPhone arrival with the notch, some Chinese companies imitated the Apple flagship and brought models such as the Oukitel U18 with a similar top covering. However, Samsung mocked the notch design of the iPhone X in a commercial.

Having said that, Google is now reportedly all set to add notch capabilities into Android. Huawei is likely to be among the first few manufacturers to start using the notch design. Similarly, Moto X5 was rumoured last month with an iPhone X-like notch.

Alongside the notch support, Bloomberg claims that this year’s Android update will expand Google Assistant integration. There are also plans to let developers integrate Google’s voice-based technology within their native apps. Google is also said to integrate the search bar on Android home screen with its personal assistant. However, the Google Assistant availability for developers and its presence in the search bar are yet to be finalised, as per the Bloomberg report.

It is additionally reported that Android P will come with a “dramatic redesign”. This suggests that Google could release Material Design 2 or the next version of its Material Design language to give a fresh look and feel. Moreover, the uplifted design would help the company attract more iPhone buyers to start preferring Android smartphones as their next pick.

Some earlier reports claimed that Android P will come features such as native call recording supportand the ability to allow carriers to hide signal strength. We need to wait until the I/O 2018 to understand what’s cooking up at Google’s labs. The developer conference is taking place between May 8 and May 10 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. Meanwhile, you can expect some more rumours revealing the new features of the next Android version.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have been outed in yet another set of renders, this time courtesy accessories maker Dbrand. The renders reveal the front and back panel of both phones. According to the images, both phones are expected to sport a fingerprint sensor below the rear camera setup. Additionally, the Galaxy S9 is seen to have a single rear camera, while the Galaxy S9+ has a dual camera setup. Another leak from Twitter also confirms this distinction. Apart from that, the selfie camera might feature Animoji-like animated stickers.

Dbrand has started taking pre-orders for skins and wraps for the Galaxy S9 series. According to the renders seen on the website, the design of the Galaxy S9 is similar to last year’s Galaxy S8. The only visible differences are a dual rear camera setup on the Galaxy S9+ and the fingerprint sensor vertical placement on both.

A tweet by tipster Evan Blass on Saturday also hinted towards the same rear setup on the Galaxy S9 series. Blass also cited sources suggesting Animoji-like “animated avatars” that can be generated using the selfie mode on both the phones. Details around that are currently unknown.

Separately, some reports have suggested a price hike for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. It is rumoured that the Galaxy S9 duo will be the most expensive phones in the Galaxy S flagship range, priced upwards of KRW 9,50,000 (roughly Rs. 56,600).

To recap the rumours, the Samsung Galaxy S9 series might be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC in US and China, and a Samsung Exynos 9810 SoC in other international markets (including India). A 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage variant is expected for the Galaxy S9+; a 512GB premium variant is also speculated to launch. The camera will get a major upgrade. Some expected features are variable aperture of f/1.5 – f/2.4, ‘Super Speed’ mode, ‘Super Slow-mo mode’, Intelligent Scan, integrated iris scanner etc.

Everything is expected to be revealed at the Galaxy Unpacked 2018 event on February 25.

How to design your kitchen for weight-loss success

As a registered dietitian nutritionist, I spend a lot of time thinking about kitchen organization. After all, the average American is in the kitchen for 37 minutes a day, prepping food and cleaning up, per data from the United States Department of Agriculture. And then there’s the time you spend eating.

Although I love to shop for pretty kitchen tools and gadgets, the real fun is in making easy organizational tweaks to promote healthy eating and maximize weight-loss efforts. Here are a few of my favorite tips for doing so. The best part? They’re all super easy to implement!

  • Have a set of measuring cups and spoons. Using measuring tools helps you get a handle on what a portion looks like so you won’t overeat. If my clients don’t own these tools, I send them to the store after our first meeting to buy them! One set works — but if you’re like me, you may find multiple sets useful. I like to keep tablespoons in containers of nuts and seeds to make healthy snacking a no-brainer.
  • Place fruit on the counter. Display those apples, pears, oranges and bananas on the countertop. You can use a pretty fruit bowl, or you can repurpose a pie plate (that’s what I do!). People who keep fruit on the countertop are more likely to have a lower BMI, a measure of body fat based on height and weight, according to a study published in Health Education and Behavior. When you want a snack, you’ll be more likely to reach for the fruit because it’s visible.
  • Hide the sugary stuff.Love chocolate? Can’t stop yourself when the jelly beans are in plain sight? People who kept candy on their desk ate almost three times more candy than volunteers who hid candy containers in their desks — and close to six times more than people who had to walk a short distance to get to the candy — according to a study published in the journal Appetite. Use this strategy in your kitchen: Hide candy in the back of the pantry or freezer. Better yet, remove the treats from the house completely. If you want a cookie, go to the bakery and buy one so you’re not tempted to eat an entire package!
  • Rearrange your pantry. Make healthy food easier to get to by placing it in the front of a cabinet. In the Health Education and Behavior study, normal-weight people were more likely to store snack foods out of sight in a cupboard or a drawer and to place healthier foods in more visible places. Women who had soda and breakfast cereal on the countertop weighed more, as did men with candy visible on the counter.
  • Have an emergency stash. One of the first things I advise new clients is shopping for a supply of healthy food. Fresh fruits, veggies and proteins are fantastic to have on hand. But if you’re a few days late with this week’s grocery run or you’re just getting back from vacation, you’ll want to dip into your emergency supply for a healthy meal. Store frozen veggies and fruit in the freezer and brown rice, quinoa, canned beans, nuts and seeds in the pantry.
  • Confine food to the kitchen. Don’t hide food throughout the house! This means saying good riddance to that candy bowl in the family room and the cookie stash in your home office. Obese participants were more likely to have food stored in rooms beyond the kitchen, according to a study in the International Journal of Obesity.
  • Bring sound into your kitchen. Whether you have a radio, speakers for your iPhone, or another way to listen to music, play soft tunes while you cook and eat. This may help you feel relaxed and encourage you to eat less, found a study by Cornell University researchers.
