HP ProBook x360 Education Edition Is a Rugged 2-in-1 Laptop Aimed at Schools

HP has announced a new convertible laptop aimed just for schools. The company touts the new ProBook x360 Education Edition to be military standard certified to withstand accidental spills and drops by kids, and it is going to be made available worldwide on December 16.

The American tech company claims that the HP ProBook x360 Education Edition is the world’s thinnest, yet most rugged 2-in-1 laptop out there. It has a 360-degree hinge to rotate completely into a tablet, or even a tent stand for ease of viewing. Furthermore, there’s a dual camera system which uses a 1080p HD camera embedded in the keyboard to let users take video in tablet mode as well.

The 11-inch laptop runs on the latest Windows 10 Anniversary Update and is encased in hard, industrial rubber. The display features optional damage-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass to withstand drops. HP claims that its engineers put the HP ProBook x360 EE through rigorous testing to ensure that it fulfils the MIL-STD 810G standard. The test involved dropping several laptops from an elevation of up to 30 inches to ascertain it durability in school environments.

The keyboard has also been designed keeping in mind the target audience. It is meant to protect the laptop form spills of about 12 ounces of liquid, and the keys are made in a way that it cannot be picked at. It has an inbuilt ‘Take a Test’ app that introduces modern and secure methods of test-taking. There’s also an additional ‘Set up School PCs’ app so that the teacher can set up devices in three easy steps, even without professional help. It supports digital Pen writing as well, and HP will sell the Active Pen as an additional accessory.
Coming to the specifications, the HP ProBook x360 Education Edition features an 11.6-inch (1366×768 pixels) LED display, and is powered by Intel Celeron or Intel Pentium processor configurations. It offers 8GB of RAM, 64GB of inbuilt storage, and support for a microSD card slot. There are two USB 3.1 ports, one USB Type-C ports, one HDMI 1.4b port, one AC power connector, and one 3.5mm audio jack. The company claims that laptop can stay active for up to 11 hours of school activities and homework.

Xiaomi Mi 5 ‘High’ edition with overclocked CPU and GPU being sold in China

Earlier this year,Xiaomi launched its Mi 5flagship smartphone globally as well as in India. And while the Mi 5 packs in quite powerful hardware as is, some online retailers in China are selling an even more powerful ‘high version’ of the smartphone.

Listed on a Chinese online retailer Gome’s website, the Xiaomi Mi 5 ‘High’ version comes with the same CPU and GPU as the regular Mi 5. Only in this case, both CPU and GPU are overclocked. While the ‘High’ version of the Mi 5 has a CPU clocked at 2.15GHz, the Adreno 530 GPU is boosted to 624MHz. This is quite higher than the base CPU and GPU clock speeds of 1.8GHz and 510MHz respectively.

In addition, the 3GB RAM included in the Mi 5 ‘High’ version is clocked at 1866MHz instead of the regular 1333MHz. This model is available in Black, White, Gold and Light Purple colour options. Battery stays the same at 3,000mAh.

Xiaomi Redmi 3S with Android Marshmallow launched, priced at Rs 6,999 onwards

Xiaomi recently forayed into the home appliances segment by launching the Mi Robot vacuum cleaner in China. Priced at 1699 Yuan (approximately Rs 17,000), the Mi Robot vacuum cleaner has a flat circular design with two rotating side brushes on the underside for pushing dirt towards the main cylindrical brush. The device also adjusts its height with the floor to clean as much dirt as possible. Two small wheels and one assistant wheel help the vacuum cleaner moving around easily. It also features a total of 12 sensors such as Laser distance sensor, wall sensor and dustbin sensor.

Last month, Xiaomi also launched its Redmi 3s budget smartphone in India. The company has launched two variants of the handset. The 2GB RAM variant is priced at Rs 6,999 and the 3GB RAM version bears a price tag of Rs 8,999. The smartphone is available in Dark Grey, Silver and Gold colour options.

Microsoft Releases Special Edition of Windows 10 for China

Microsoft is said to have released a special version of Windows 10 in China. Dubbed Windows 10 Zhuangongban, or “Windows 10 Specially-provided Edition,” the variant boasts of fewer consumer-centric features when compared to Windows 10 Home (hence, Windows 10 Pro), but offers additional security measures as mandated by the Chinese government.

Chinese publication Caixin reports (via TechInAsia) that Microsoft and the government of China worked together to complete the development of “Special Edition of Windows 10.” The new version of Windows is the result of a joint venture between Microsoft and China Electronics Technology Group (CETC) that was announced in December last year to license, deploy, and manage Windows 10 for China’s government agencies and state-owned enterprises.

The Caixin report cites Ralph Haupter, Microsoft China’s CEO, to say that the Windows 10 Specially-provided Edition offers fewer of consumer-centric features but comes with management and security controls in accordance with the instructions of China’s government. Haupter didn’t share much detail about these “management and security controls,” though he noted that this version of Windows 10 can run all Windows compatible programs.

China is one of the major markets for Microsoft, however, the local government has become increasingly concerned with Western companies in the light of revelations made by whistleblowerEdward Snowden. In 2014, China government announced that it was banning Windows 8 from the government offices as part of a notice on the use of energy-saving products. Weirdly enough, at the time, a report on Xinhua news agency noted that the ban would also bolster computer security. Microsoft had then just ended support for Windows XP. Last year, China’s antitrust raided Microsoft’s offices in China.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 Forbidden City Edition is going on sale in December (the company didn’t specify an exact date). It will cost CNY 5,000 ($720/€630). That’s the same price as the 8/256GB model (the base 6/128GB model is CNY 3,300).

This special edition will pack 10GB of RAM (the first model in the Mix 3 lineup to do so). Also, it’s a different kind of blue – it’s inspired by the ceramic vases of one of the ruling dynasties of China. Fitting as the back of the phone is made of ceramic.

Also, there’s a gold inlay of a mythical create on the back of the phone. The Forbidden City retail package will come with a cool case that features an even bigger rendition of the beast and you’ll get a statuette of it, a scale version of those found in the eponymous city (the statuette is plated with 24K gold).

The case also includes a 10W wireless charger, but all Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 models have it.

After months of beta updates, Android Pie was finally released in its stable avatar earlier this month. The update has started rolling out to the Pixel range of handsets as well as the Essential Phone. To strengthen its focus in the budget smartphone segment, Google on Wednesday announced the arrival of Android 9 Pie (Go edition), successor to last year’s Android Oreo (Go edition) that was unveiled back in December 2017. The latest update brings major features such as a boost to internal storage, faster boot times, security features like verified boot, and a dashboard to monitor data consumption.

Google also stated that the first devices with Android Pie (Go edition) will hit shelves later this Fall, however exact dates have not been mentioned. Existing smartphones that run Android Oreo (Go edition) are expected to get the major software update sometime later this year or early next year. These include phones like the Nokia 1, Lava Z50, Micromax Bharat Go, and the Spice F311.

The features coming to these budget smartphones with Android 9 Pie (Go edition) include up to 500MB of additional storage right out-of-the-box, claimed faster boot times, verified boot, and an accessible dashboard for data tracking. Android Pie (Go edition) will come with fewer preloaded apps and newer apps that are lighter. It will also have security features such as Find My Device built-in, and offline app install scans. “Collectively, these features help solve some of the most common pain points for entry-level device owners: storage, performance, data management, and security,” said Sagar Kamdar, Director of Product Management, Android.

Late last month, Google had updated its YouTube Go app with a new .yt file extension that allowed users with Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphones to save YouTube offline videos to their gallery. The Google Go app was updated with webpage voice dictation and a new Navigation for Google Maps Go extension app was released.

Google claims that more than 200 handsets, in over 120 countries across the globe, now run Android (Go edition) – and that more than 100 manufacturers already have plans to release similar phones before the end of the year.

Mi Mix 3 is expected to be one of the upcoming smartphones from Xiaomi. While there may be some time left before there is any official announcement regarding the upcoming handset, a number of leaks surrounding the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 have already started to surface on the Internet. A leaked teaser had previously suggested that the smartphone will launch in September this year. Following in the footsteps of Oppo and Vivo, Xiaomi is also rumoured to be designing the Mi Mix 3 with a pop-up camera. Meanwhile, a new report has leaked the pricing details of the Mi Mix 3. Additionally, a new Ferrari Edition of the smartphone is also expected to arrive along with the original variant. Separately, a Xiaomi wireless charger has been certified by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and it may launch alongside the Mi Mix 3.

As per report by Android Pure, Xiaomi will launch a standard variant of the Mi Mix 3 and a premium model with a ceramic back. In terms of specifications, both the models will be identical, including the pop-up camera. Also, the smartphone will reportedly be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. According to the leak, the Xiaomi Mi Mix may ship in two variants with one variant featuring an under-display front camera and one featuring a pop-up camera. Some leaked images allegedly show that the company will replace the pop-up camera module with a front-facing camera that is hidden within the display.

In terms of pricing, the 6GB RAM/ 64GB inbuilt storage variant will cost $510 (roughly Rs. 35,100) for Standard Edition and $660 (roughly Rs. 45,400) for Ceramic Edition. The 6GB/ 128GB variant will be priced at $555 (roughly Rs. 38,200) for the Standard Edition and $705 (48,500) for the Ceramic Edition. Meanwhile, the 8GB/ 128GB model will cost $600 (roughly Rs. 41,300) for the Standard Edition and $750 (roughly Rs. 51,600) for the Ceramic Edition. Finally, the 8GB/ 256GB variant will be available for $645 (roughly Rs. 44,400) for the Standard Edition and $795 (roughly Rs. 54,700) for the Ceramic Edition.

Apart from these variants, Xiaomi is also reportedly planning to launch a Ferrari Edition of the Mi Mix 3. If launched, it will take on the Oppo Find X Automobili Lamborghini Edition. As of now, there is no information of the specifications of this variant, though we can expect an upgrade in terms of design, battery and inbuilt storage.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi may also launch a wireless charger alongside the Mi Mix 3. It had first launched a Mi wireless charger alongside the bezel-less Mi Mix 2S. As spotted by tipster Roland Quandt, the Wireless Power Consortium has just certified a wireless charger made by the company. Since Mi Mix 2S is the only smartphone from the company that supports Qi wireless charging, it is expected that the upcoming Mi Mix 3 launch may see the new wireless charger as well.

After rumours of Motorola’s new Android One-based smartphone expected to arrive soon, fresh reports are coming in that suggest the Lenovo-owned phone manufacturer might also be working on a smartphone that runs Google’s Android Oreo (Go edition), targeted towards budget smartphones. Dubbed the Moto C2, this smartphone is expected to be the most affordable smartphone in the brand’s lineup with features like 1GB of RAM and a 2100mAh battery. Multiple variants of this particular handset have been spotted going through certification in different regions.

The Moto C2 has been spotted on the portal of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), as first reported by Nashville Chatter Class. The report goes on to state that, previously, multiple variants of the same smartphone were spotted on other certifications sites; these include XT1920-15, XT1920-16, XT1920-18, and XT1920-19. The XT1920-15 is expected to launch in Western European markets, the XT1920-16 in EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa), and the last two variants (XT1920-18 and XT1920-19) of the purported Moto C2 are said to be made available in Latin America single-SIM and dual-SIM variants, respectively.

As for specifications, the Moto C2 will sport 1GB of RAM, 16GB of inbuilt storage, a 2000/ 2100mAh battery, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, and a Cat. 10 LTE modem, the report notes. The budget smartphone is said to measure 147.88×71.22mm. The report claims that, being an Android Oreo (Go edition) phone, the Moto C2 might sport a small 5.2-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

As for the rumoured Motorola One Power, previous leaks have suggested that this will be a mid-range smartphone with specifications on par with the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1. It is expected to feature specifications such as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, a 3780mAh battery, a 12+5-megapixel dual rear camera setup, and Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box.

Acer has tied up with Marvel Studios for the launch of three special edition laptops in India, which are inspired from characters from the upcoming movie, Avengers: Infinity War. The laptops include the Captain America Edition of the Aspire 6 which is priced at Rs. 63,999; a Thanos Edition of the Nitro 5 at Rs. 80,999, and an Iron Man Edition of the Swift 3 that costs Rs. 79,999. All three laptops will be available through offline stores like Croma, Reliance Digital and Acer Exclusive stores starting April 20. You’ll also be able to find them online exclusively on Amazon India from April 23.

The Aspire 6 – Captain America Edition features an aluminium lid with Captain America’s iconic pentagram. It’s powered by an Intel 8th Gen Core i5-8250U CPU and comes with 8GB of DDR4 RAM which is user upgradable, 1TB hard drive, an Nvidia GeForce MX150 GPU and a HD webcam. After multiple leaks spread over several months, Lenovo’sMoto X4 smartphone was launched at IFA 2017 recently. While the launch didn’t throw many major surprises, as it turns out, we are not yet done with the smartphone. A Moto X4 smartphone with Android One branding has now been leaked in a render image and the handset has been tipped to make its way to the US soon.

Popular tipster @evleaks aka Evan Blass on Saturday shared the render image of the Moto X4 smartphone with Android One branding at the back. While there seem to be no other changes in terms of design, as can be seen from the camera module, the handset in the render image can be seen sporting an Android One moniker towards the bottom end.

Further, 9To5Google reported back in April that Moto X series smartphone for this year might be among the prime contenders to be launched in US as part of Google’s Android One program. The publication has now reiterated that Moto X4 will likely to be the first Android One handset to be launched in the US.

Apart from being part of the Android One program, the Moto X4 smartphone is likely to ship with same specifications as the regular variant of the handset. This means, the smartphone will pack a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) LTPS IPS display with 424ppi pixel density and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. The Moto X4 is powered by the 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 octa-core SoC paired with Adreno 508 GPU and 3GB of RAM.

In terms of optics, the Moto X4 sports a dual camera setup at the back. It houses one 12-megapixel dual autofocus sensor with f/2.0 aperture and 1.4-micron pixels; and another 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle sensor with 120-degree field of view, f/2.2 aperture, and 1.12-micron pixels. This dual camera setup comes alongside a colour correlated temperature (CCT) dual-LED flash and PDAF.

If you are wondering what the differentiating factor would be between the regular variant of the Moto X4 and the Android One edition, the latter will be offered with a promise of regular, timely, and guaranteed Android updates. The new variant of the smartphone will offer a pure Android experience with a clean design and a small, carefully curated set of preinstalled apps. The services offered by Google (such as Assistant and Photos) will be well optimised and the Moto X4 Android One edition can be expected to come with Google Play Protect security feature out-of-the-box.
