By now you’ve probably got the October 2018 update on all your PCs and laptops which run Windows 10, but what’s coming next? Well, Microsoft has two updates planned for 2019, one in the first half of the year and another in the second half. Don’t expect any big changes, though, as this next update is all about refinements and improvements to the interface to make Windows 10 easier and nicer to use.

Along with everyone else, we thought this would be called the April 2019 Update, but because Microsoft has decided to do extended beta testing it has pushed the release back a few weeks so the official name is the May 2019 Update. The codename is 19H1, rather than the expected Redstone 6, but it’s no secret that Microsoft’s roadmap is for twice yearly updates to Windows 10, so it makes sense.

There’s still no exact date when the update will be available, so keep this page bookmarked as we’ll update it when there’s new information.

One big change is that – based on user feedback (i.e. people not liking big updates being forced upon them) – Microsoft is putting the decision on when to update in your hands. You’ll also be able to pause updates in all versions of Windows 10 for up to 35 days.

There aren’t really any major new features in this update. The much-vaunted Sets, a new way to group apps that you want to keep together, seems to have been quietly dropped. The changes are mostly quality-of-life tweaks, such as the ability to customise the shortcuts in Action Centre instead of being redirected to the Settings app. Also, when this version of Windows 10 is installed fresh or arrives on, say, a brand new laptop, the Start menu is simplified with fewer tiles and now offers the ability to unpin whole groups.

It’s still in beta, but you can already try out the May 2019 Update! Just sign up to the Windows Insider Program, join the Fast Ring (which receives updates more frequently) and then in the Settings app click on Update & Seciruty > Windows Insider Programme > Get started. From the menu pick ‘Skip ahead to the next version of Windows’.

Google on Wednesday released a revamped version of an app – Google My Business – meant to help small and mid-size businesses (SMBs) manage profile on-the-go and boost customer engagement.

The Google My Business app is a simple and free tool for SMBs to start their digital journey through listings on Google and keep their business presence up-to-date on Google Search and Google Maps, the company said. The new app allows businesses to update their profile, converse with customers on-the-go. It is now available for Android and iOS.

New features such as the new post button, a customer tab and the bottom navigation bar, allow businesses to follow and message customers directly from the app, enhancing engagement between both the parties.

“The new Google My Business app deepens our commitment to help businesses grow online. The new app will encourage businesses to manage their presence on Google in real time, make their profiles more appealing and interact with customers,” Shalini Girish, Director, Marketing Solutions, Google India, said in a statement.

“For instance, if you’re a restaurant owner and have a packed house on a Friday night, the app allows you to create a post with a picture of the restaurant to engage with prospective customers on Maps and Search,” Girish said.

“It’s this real-time presence that we hope will go a long way in helping businesses attract new customers and bring back existing ones,” Girish added.

Sony Xperia XA2 Plus is the latest smartphone from the Japanese phone maker’s bandwagon. Announced in London on Wednesday, the handset comes with features such as a 23-megapixel rear camera, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and support for 4K video recording. Colour variants of the Sony Xperia XA2 Plus include Black, Green, Gold, and Silver. While pricing has not been revealed, the handset will be made available in late August 2018. Additionally, a new leather-like style cover stand for the Sony Xperia XA2 Plus has been launched in Black and Silver colour options.

“Our super mid-range line inherits everything we love about the Sony innovations at the premium end of our portfolio,” said Hideyuki Furumi, Executive Deputy President at Sony Mobile Communications. “Xperia XA2 Plus further improves on that with a reimagined 18:9 display, Sony’s Hi-Res Audio and powerful camera technology, to offer a unique content consumption and creation device for consumers at this section of the market.”

The Xperia XA2 Plus comes in single-SIM (Nano) and dual-SIM (Nano) variants, runs Android Oreo out-of-the-box, and sports a 6-inch full-HD+ display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, paired with 4GB/ 6GB of RAM. Internal storage variants include 32GB and 64GB, which is expandable via microSD card (up to 400GB).

In the camera department, the Xperia XA2 Plus bears a 23-megapixel rear sensor with Hybrid autofocus, 84-degree wide-angle lens, and support for 4K video recording. On the front, the handset sports an 8-megapixel 120-degree wide-angle sensor with f/2.4 aperture for selfies and video calling. There is a 3,580mAh battery under the hood, with support for Qnovo adaptive charging and Quick Charge 3.0.

Connectivity on the Xperia XA2 Plus includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and USB Type-C. There is a fingerprint sensor on the back of the smartphone. Dimensions of the phone are 157x75x9.6mm and weight is 205 grams.

Redmi S2 debuted in China on Thursday after much anticipation. The new Xiaomi smartphone, which is the first Redmi S series handset, is claimed to be the “best Redmi selfie phone”. The Redmi S2 also has a bunch of artificial intelligence (AI) features that are aimed at distinguishing the experience. These features help enhance shots and enable Xiaomi’s proprietary Xiao Ai voice assistant. Also, the handset includes a thin-bezel display and a Face Unlock feature that both are currently in trend. But interestingly, the price of Redmi S2 brings it to the segment that already has Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5. That same segment also has the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 as a strong contender. Similarly, there is the Honor 9 Lite that is facing heat from the Redmi Note 5 and ZenFone Max Pro M1 but competing against various other models available under the ultra-popular sub-Rs. 15,000 price bracket in India.

Here’s a comparison of the Redmi S2 with that of the Redmi Note 5, ZenFone Max Pro M1, and Honor 9 Lite.

The Redmi S2 price starts at CNY 999 (approximately Rs. 10,600) for the 3GB RAM, 32GB onboard storage variant, while its 4GB RAM, 64GB storage variant is priced at CNY 1,299 (roughly Rs. 13,700). Both variants will go on sale in China on May 17 via Suning.com in three colour options, namely Champagne Gold, Platinum Silver, and Rose Gold. Details about the price and availability of the Redmi S2 in India haven’t yet been revealed.

The Redmi Note 5 price in India starts at Rs. 9,999 for the 3GB RAM, 32GB storage variant, while its 4GB RAM, 64GB storage variant is priced at Rs. 11,999. Both Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 variants come in Black, Gold, Lake Blue, and Rose Gold colour options and are available for purchase in India via Flipkart, Mi Home, and Mi.com. It will also soon go on sale through Xiaomi’s offline retail partners.

The Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 price in India starts at Rs. 10,999 for 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage variant, whereas its 4GB RAM, 64GB storage model is available at Rs. 12,999. The handset comes in Midnight Black and Grey colour options. It is available for purchase exclusively through Flipkart.

Lastly, the Honor 9 Lite price in India starts at Rs. 10,999 for the 3GB RAM, 32GB storage variant, while its 4GB RAM, 64GB variant comes with a price tag of Rs. 14,999. Both are available for purchase via Flipkart and the Honor India Store. The ZenFone handset comes in Sapphire Blue, Midnight Black, Glacial Grey colour options.

The dual-SIM (Nano) Xiaomi Redmi S2 runs Android-based MIUI 9 and features a 5.99-inch HD+ (720×1440 pixels) display with 70.8 percent NTSC colour gamut. Under the hood, there is a Snapdragon 625 SoC, coupled with either 3GB or 4GB RAM – depending on the model purchased. The smartphone has a dual rear camera setup that comprises a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. There is an LED flash, and the camera setup supports features such as AI Portrait mode, HDR, and facial recognition. On the front, the Redmi S2 has a 16-megapixel sensor that has 2-micron pixel size – combining four pixels into one pixel. The front camera also supports AI Portrait Mode, AI Smart Beauty, Front HDR, and Face Unlock.

For storing content, the Redmi S2 has 32GB and 64GB storage options that both are expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB) via a dedicated card slot. The smartphone has 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Micro-USB port. Sensors on board include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, infrared, and a proximity sensor. Besides, the smartphone packs a 3080mAh battery and measures 160.73×77.26×8.1mm.

The dual-SIM Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 runs Android Nougat-based MIUI 9 and features a 5.99-inch full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and 84 percent NTSC colour gamut. It is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC, coupled with either 3GB or 4GB RAM. For taking pictures and recording videos, the Redmi Note 5 has a single, 12-megapixel camera sensor on the back with an f/2.2 aperture lens and an LED flash. The front of the smartphone bears a 5-megapixel sensor that has an LED selfie-light module. The front camera supports features such as Beautify 3.0 beautification tech.

Xiaomi has provided 32GB and 64GB storage options on the Redmi Note 5 that both are expandable via microSD card in a hybrid dual-SIM format. On the connectivity front, the handset has 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Micro-USB. The smartphone packs a 4000mAh battery and measures 158.5×75.45×8.05mm.

In contrast, the dual-SIM (Nano) Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 runs pure Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and is claimed to receive Android P and Android Q upgrades. The handset features a 5.99-inch full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) IPS FullView display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. It comes with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, paired with Adreno 509 GPU and either 3GB or 4GB RAM. The smartphone has a dual camera setup on the back that includes a 13-megapixel primary Omnivision sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and a 5-megapixel secondary depth sensing sensor. On the front, there is an 8-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, 85.5-degree wide-angle lens. Both camera setups have an LED flash.

In terms of storage, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 has up to 64GB of onboard storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 2TB). The smartphone has 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Micro-USB. Besides, it packs a 5000mAh battery and measures 159x76x8.46mm.

Contrary to the Redmi S2, Redmi Note 5, and ZenFone Max Pro M1, the dual-SIM (Nano) Honor 9 Lite runs Android 8.0 Oreo-based EMUI 8.0 and features a 5.65-inch full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) IPS display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The smartphone has an octa-core Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 659 SoC, coupled with 3GB or 4GB RAM. Asus has provided four cameras on the Honor 9 Lite that sit on the front and back as dual camera setups. Both have a 13-megapixel primary camera sensor and a 2-megapixel secondary camera. On the back, there is also an LED flash and a PDAF lens.

On the storage front, the Honor 9 Lite has 32GB and 64GB storage options – both of which are expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB) in a hybrid dual-SIM configuration. The smartphone has 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, GPS/ A-GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Micro-USB. Sensors on the handset include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, magnetometer (digital compass), and a proximity sensor. At last, the Honor 9 Lite packs a 3000mAh battery and measures 151×71.9×7.6mm.

Windows 10 Won't Get Fresh Features in Next Update Due to Blue Screen of Death Issues

Instead of providing a host of fresh features, Microsoft has decided to fix a bunch of reliability issues through its new Windows 10 update. The latest move comes days after the anticipation of the next major Windows 10 update codenamed Redstone 4 that was internally due on April 10 and was likely to arrive as the Spring Creators Update. It has been found that the company transformed its original decision to mainly avoid Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) issues that could be triggered through the bugs hidden under the existing Windows build.

The new Windows build, which comes in the form of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17134 (RS4), is initially available to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. According to The Verge, citing people familiar with the development, the same build has been marked as the final version of the next major Windows 10 update. This highlights that the company is not in favour of bringing feature-rich update this time.

Microsoft’s Dona Sarkar defines the reason for the new move. “As Build 17133 progressed through the rings, we discovered some reliability issues we wanted to fix. In certain cases, these reliability issues could have led to a higher percentage of (BSOD) on PCs for example,” writes Sarkar, who heads the Windows Insider Program at Microsoft, in a blog post.

Microsoft hasn’t specified any details about the issues that have the potential to bring BSOD issues. Also, it is so far unclear that whether the new update will debut as the Spring Creators Update.

Some of the key features that the next major Windows 10 update was expected to bring include the addition of Timeline, HDR support, and some interface-level changes through Fluent Design tweaks. As per the recent Windows 10 Insider Preview, Microsoft is also in plans to bring an extended range of Sets to let users add tabs to File Explorer, Notepad, Command Prompt, and PowerShell. This is expected to debut on Redstone 5 build that will come later this year.

Microsoft is expected to detail Redstone 5 features at its Build conference in May. The developer-focused conference will also likely to detail Windows ML that is was recently released as a dedicated artificial intelligence (AI) platform.

Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 is yet another smartphone that the company launched on Tuesday beside the Huawei P20 lineup and the Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS. The Chinese mobile maker, at an event in Paris, unveiled its flagship smartphones – Huawei P20 and Huawei P20 Pro. While the company had already launched the Huawei P20 Lite earlier this month, it has now quietly rolled out a new smartphone – the Y7 Prime 2018 – that appears to be a toned down version of the flagships. It is a refreshed version of the Huawei Y7 Prime that was launched last year.

The Huawei Y7 Prime smartphone comes with a big 5.99-inch 18:9 display without the notch. While in terms of features, the smartphone does not have top of the line specifications, it does introduce popular functionalities such as face unlock, spilt-screen mode, FullView display, AR lens, dual cameras, Android Oreo, and more. Notably, Huawei has not revealed the pricing details of the Y7 Prime 2018, nor is there any word on its release date. However, we do know the smartphone will be available in three colour variants – Black, Blue, and Gold.

The dual-SIM Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 sports a 5.99-inch HD+ (720×1440 pixels) FullView display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, and runs Android 8.0 Oreo-based EMUI 8.0. The handset has a triple card slot so it can include two SIMs and one microSD at the same time. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8937 Snapdragon 430 processor coupled with 3GB of RAM. It features a dual rear camera setup with 13-megapixel and 2-megapixel sensors. On the front, the handset has an 8-megapixel camera.

On board the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018, is 32GB of inbuilt storage, expandable via microSD card. The smartphone offers 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, and NFC (LDN-TL10 only). It bears an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, compass, and a proximity sensor. It also features a fingerprint sensor at the back. The handset is fuelled by a 3000mAh battery. The smartphone measures 158.3×76.7×7.8mm and weighs 155 grams.

Just a couple of days after announcing its launch date, Oppo on Friday revealed the key specifications and features of the Oppo F7 that is set to debut in India on March 26. The new smartphone will be the successor to the Oppo F5 that was launched last year and will sport an iPhone X-like notch. It will also bring a bunch of artificial intelligence (AI) backed features to take on the competition. The formal launch invite of the smartphone previously hinted that it will be announced in the presence of three Indian cricketers, namely Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Ravichandran Ashwin, to attract cricket lovers in the country.

As per the new information provided by Oppo through a press note, the Oppo F7 will come with a 6.2-inch full-HD (1080×2280 pixels) Super Full Screen panel that sports an 89.09 percent of screen-to-body ratio and 19:9 aspect ratio. The handset, instead of using any physical buttons or touch controls, will support gestures to let users easily navigate between apps. This appears to be an addition highly inspired by the gesture controls on the iPhone X. Additionally, Oppo has specified that it will offer features such as an App-in-App view as well as the ability to record and share videos of gameplay on the device.

For capturing selfies, the Oppo F7 will come with a 25-megapixel camera sensor on the front. The front-facing camera sensor will also support features such as AI selfie, AI Beauty, and Real-time HDR. Further, the handset is touted to offer preloaded Cover Shot and AR (Augmented Reality) stickers. The latter between the two new features is likely to be similar to the AR stickers that were debuted on Google Pixel phones last year.

We need to wait for the official launch to obtain the price and availability details of the Oppo F7. Meanwhile, you can expect some more details in the coming days.

LG X4+ Rugged Smartphone With Hi-Fi DAC Audio Launched: Price, Specifications, Features

LG on Friday launched the new LG X4+ in South Korea. The LG X4+ is the first smartphone to feature the LG Pay smartphone payment platform. It will allow users to enter their fingerprints or passwords to make payments. Additionally, LG has introduced Finger Touch that will enable users to take selfies and screenshots by pressing the fingerprint sensor. The phone has been priced at KRW 300,000 (roughly Rs. 17,900) and will be available later this month on three mobile carriers in South Korea.

The LG X4+ sports an aluminium back and comes in two colour variants – Moroccan Blue and Lavender Violet. The smartphone is claimed to have passed the 6-part MIL-STD 810G military standard of the US Department of Defense, which covers impact, vibration, high temperature, low temperature, humidity, and thermal shock.

The LG X4+ sports a 5.3-inch (720×1280 pixels) HD IPS display. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC, coupled with 2GB LPDDR3 RAM. There is a 13-megapixel rear camera sensor with 77-degree angle, and a 5-megapixel front sensor with 100-degree wide-angle lens. The smartphone runs Android 7.0 Nougat.

The phone has 32GB of inbuilt storage expandable via microSD card (up to 2TB). Connectivity options on the phone include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, and USB Type-B. Dimensions of the phone are 148.6×75.1×8.6mm and the weight is 172.3 grams. There is a 3000mAh battery under the hood.

Features of the phone include a fingerprint sensor (on the back), LG Pay, and Hi-Fi DAC audio. With Hi-Fi DAC, the LG X4+ supports up to 32-bit 192kHz audio output.

Apple Partner Qualcomm Says Android Is Always First to New Features Hours Ahead of iPhone 8 Event

Hours ahead of Apple’s major iPhone event, in which the company is widely expected to launch the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X, its partner Qualcomm has stirred controversy by saying that Android smartphone makers are always first to bring new cutting technology feature to their products.

Qualcomm has shared more than 20 examples to make the case for how Android smartphone makers have been the first ones to introduce new features. Some of those examples include – fingerprint under display (Qualcomm Reference Design Handset), bezel-less design (first introduced in Xiaomi Mi Mix from last year), OLED Display (LG Flex 2) and Facial Recognition (Samsung Galaxy S8). Interestingly these all features are expected to be selling points of Apple’s supposedly upcoming iPhone models that the company would unveil later today. Other notable mentions are Gigabit LTE (Samsung Galaxy S8) and Bluetooth v5.0 (everything running the Snapdragon 835 SoC).

The telecom giant’s brutal blog post comes months after both of them have sued each other in global patent licensing dispute. Earlier this year, Apple sued the chipmaker for roughly $1 billion claiming that Qualcomm has been “charging royalties for technologies they have nothing to do with.” At the time, Qualcomm dismissed Apple’s accusation. But months later, it filed a lawsuit against Apple, asking the US trade regulators to ban iPhone imports, as they allegedly infringe on six patents. The patents, owned by Qualcomm, provide technology to improve battery life, Qualcomm said.

Meanwhile, on the blog post published on Monday, Francisco Cheng, director of technical marketing said it has “enabled some notable world firsts on Android, and some remain Android exclusives to this day. […] Inventions from Qualcomm lay the foundation for so many technologies and experiences we value in our smartphones today — on Android and other platforms.”

Apple would certainly not appreciate Qualcomm’s constant commentary on how rival products are better, especially on the day when it plans to launch its own flagship iPhone models.
