After its pre-GST sale, Paytm Mall has announced the ‘Back to College’ laptop sale. The sale is already underway and will go on till June 25. The four-day long sale will see great offers on laptops, hard disks, headphones, speakers, and other PC and mobile accessories from brands including Apple, Asus, HP, Acer, and Lenovo.

Just like Flipkart, Paytm Mall is offering Intel-powered laptops starting at Rs. 9,999. Other laptops like Apple MacBook Air will be available with cashbacks starting from Rs. 7,500, Intel Core i3 laptops start at Rs. 22,999 with cashbacks starting from Rs. 3,000. Also, Paytm Mall exclusive Lenovo Ideapad 110 is selling for a price of Rs. 19,990 with an additional Rs. 2,500 cashback – bringing the price down to Rs. 17,490.

Furthermore, Intel Core i3 and i5 laptops with 1TB HDD, 4GB and above RAM are available starting at Rs. 22,999. Intel Core i5 and i7 laptops with 2GB and above graphics card are priced at Rs. 38,999 on Paytm.

Coming to accessories, there’s up to 70 percent off and up to 30 percent cashback on the purchase of power banks, keyboards, and mouses. There’s up to 70 percent off and up to 25 percent cashback on headphones, headsets, pen drives, and memory cards. Also, there is up to Rs. 2,500 cashback on external hard drives as well, and up to 50 percent off and up to 25 percent cashback on speakers.

Paytm Mall, Paytm’s recently announced e-commerce unit, has announced a three-day long Pre-GST Sale where consumers can get big cashback on the purchase of products like televisions, laptops, and more.

Under the Pre-GST Sale, Paytm Mall will be offering up to Rs. 20,000 cashback on the purchase of select products. The dedicated page for the sale is up already, and it confirms that the sale will begin midnight. The three-day Paytm sale begins on Tuesday, and will end on Thursday.

The Paytm Pre-GST Sale will include products like televisions, consumer durables, laptops and DSLRs at up to Rs. 20,000 cashback. The sale will also see discounts on ACs and refrigerators as well. The details of the products on sale will be revealed during the sale. The dedicated page hints that Paytm’s Pre-GST Sale will have discount on televisions from brands like LG, Samsung, and Sony. In terms of laptops, consumers can expect Apple, Dell, and Lenovo laptops on offer.

Paytm also claims that few lucky consumers can be eligible to win an iPhone 7 with a shopping of minimum Rs. 1,000 during the Pre-GST Sale. Though, there isn’t much detail about the terms and conditions of the offer as of now.
Additionally, other products such as Bluetooth speakers, footwear and accessories will be sold at up to 50 percent off with additional 25 percent cashback, the company says. The Paytm Pre-GST Sale also lists cashback of up to Rs. 10,000 on the purchase of smartphones, though only Oppo and Micromax smartphones seems to be on offer as of now. You can wait for few more hours to see the offerings under the sale.

The all-new Paytm sale offer has been announced for retailers to clear out inventory ahead of the new tax rates being effective. Announcing the sale, Paytm in a press note said that it will host over 6,000 retailers across over 500 brands as part of the Paytm Pre-GST sale

Microsoft, Qualcomm Partner to Bring Windows 10 to Snapdragon-Powered Laptops

Qualcomm and Microsoft at Computex 2017 have announced that HP, Lenovo, and Asus will be the first three companies to launch new devices based on the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Mobile PC Platform. The first wave of devices will all be slim, fanless portables along the lines of laptops and 2-in-1s. No specific time models, prices or time frames have been disclosed, but the companies have previously stated that they will ship products later this year. The companies describe the products as “always-connected”, and say that this move brings “the best of smartphones to the PC”.

The new Snapdragon 835 Mobile PC Platform uses a slightly modified version of the same ARM-based Snapdragon 835 SoC being used for flagship smartphones beginning in 2017, as well as the X16 LTE modem. Both Qualcomm and Microsoft promise that such devices can be constantly connected and deliver more than a day of battery life. Devices can be slim and fanless, allowing for a variety of shapes and sizes including foldable and detachable 2-in-1s. They will Windows 10 exactly as it is on traditional PCs, and most existing software will work seamlessly. Qualcomm has shown off a motherboard which is physically smaller than that required by its competition.

Software compiled for Microsoft’s Universal App platform will run natively on Windows 10, while most other programs can still run seamlessly using emulation for the traditional x86 PC architecture. Both Microsoft and Qualcomm say that there will be a slight performance penalty when using emulation, but that will vary depending on the specific software and usage scenario. Also according to both companies, there should be no need for end users to do anything differently.

Performance is expected to be equivalent to that of Intel’s ultra-low-power Y-series Core CPUs which are also designed for fanless devices. While other ARM-based processors might show up in devices over time, Microsoft and Qualcomm have described a tight partnership, with focus specifically on the Snapdragon 835 SoC. The companies describe such products as the next class of devices, designed for a world in which people expect to have constant cellular data connectivity just like they expect to breathe air. Snapdragon-powered PCs don’t have to wake from sleep to receive notifications and messages, and the Cortana voice assistant can listen for instructions, much like how current-day smartphones behave.

Many of the benefits of the platform require a constant cellular Internet connection. Microsoft and Qualcomm both point to the fact that 4G data is becoming cheaper around the world, and that data caps are being increased. While all products will have a SIM card slot, the companies are also pushing the emerging eSIM standard which would allow users to choose a cellular service provider and even top up prepaid accounts using an app on the device rather than swapping SIM cards.

While no specific pricing is known yet, both Qualcomm and Microsoft indicated that pricing would be lower than that of a premium laptop, and more along the lines of today’s flagship smartphones, which would peg them at roughly $700-800.

Lenovo Launches Modular ThinkPad X1 Tablet, Laptops, and More Ahead of CES

Lenovo ahead of CES 2016 has unveiled several new devices it will launch at the trade show. The Chinese consumer electronics giant introduced 12 new laptops, an all-in-one system, a tablet, a monitor, two 2-in-1 laptops, two ThinkCentre-in-one systems, apart from a new budget laptop with Chrome OS and Windows 10 variants.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga will be available starting this month from $1,449 (roughly Rs. 96,300). The laptop’s Oled display model will however only hit the market in April, and its pricing has not yet been revealed. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon can be purchased in the US starting February from $1,299 (roughly Rs. 86,300). While the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet will reach the shelves in the same month starting $899 (roughly Rs. 59,700), the Lenovo ThinkCentre X1 AIO and the Lenovo ThinkVision X1 monitor will be available to buy starting March from $1,029 (roughly Rs. 68,300) and $799 (roughly Rs. 53,000) respectively.

Lenovo will start selling its ThinkPad T460, ThinkPad T460p, ThinkPad T460s and ThinkPad T560 from February starting at $909 (roughly Rs. 60,400), $1249 (roughly Rs. 83,000), $1,059 (roughly Rs. 70,400), and $969 (roughly Rs. 46,200) respectively. The Lenovo ThinkPad X260 Ultrabook, along with ThinkPad L460 and ThinkPad L560, will arrive the same month starting at $929 (roughly Rs. 61,700), $749 (roughly Rs. 49, 800), and $779 (roughly Rs. 53,000) respectively. The ThinkPad 13 Windows 10 version will however, be available later in Q2 this year starting at $449 (roughly Rs. 29,800), while the Chrome OS version will reach around June priced at $399 (roughly Rs. 26,500). The ThinkVision X24 Pro monitor is scheduled for June starting $399. ThinkCentre TIO II will be available from May, starting at $239 (roughly Rs. 15,800) for 21.5-inch display model and $269 (roughly Rs. 17,800) for 23.8-inch model. The Business Edition of Yoga 900 and MIIX 700 were also unveiled, but without pricing. While the Lenovo Yoga 900 Business Edition will be available from February, the Lenovo MIIX 700 Business Edition will be available from April.

The Chinese tech firm has also launched a bunch of accessories for laptops and AIOs, namely the Lenovo Productivity Module, Projector Module, 3D Imaging Module, ThinkPad X1 Wireless Touch Mouse, ThinkPad X1 In-Ear Headphones, ThinkPad X1 Sleeve, and ThinkPad 65W Micro Power Adapter, all of which fall in a $50 to $279 price range.

Lenovo touted its ThinkPad X1 Yoga for its 0.66-inch thickness and 2.8 pounds (roughly Rs. 1.2 kgs) weight. According to the firm, it is world’s first convertible laptop featuring an optional Samsung Oled display. The Oled display is optional. The Windows 10 laptop also comes with an active pen for better productivity.

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon at the CES 2016 was claimed to be the world’s lightest 14-inch business Ultrabook by Lenovo. The laptop includes customer-centric design improvements based on feedback. It features increased memory and storage capacity, improved connectivity, and more lightweight at 2.6 pounds (roughly 1.17 kgs) than the previous versions. The ThinkPad X1 series houses up to 1TB Samsung M.2 NVMe SSD storage; Qualcomm Snapdragon X7 LTE modem with 4G LTE Advanced Carrier Aggregation support for better connectivity, and more.

It comes with anti-glare 23.8-inch display. The Lenovo ThinkVision X1 as per the tech company is the world’s first monitor to receive the TUV Eye-Comfort certification. It features a 27-inch UltraHD edge-to-edge anti-glare display and houses USB type C port as well.

The Windows 10-based ThinkPad X1 Tablet features a modular design and is rated to deliver up to 15 hours of work time when clubbed with the Productivity Module accessory. Besides several ports and dock connectivity features, the tablet houses an integrated projector as well. The projector comes as a part of the detachable battery. Intel RealSense 3D camera is also one of the highlights of the modular tablet. It is powered by an Intel Core m7 processor.

Lenovo also showcased the ThinkPad W700ds (seen below), which it claimed was the world’s first dual screen mobile workstation. Not much is known about the device for now though. The new ThinkPad T460 and T560 launched at CES 2016 were touted for their “incredible battery life”, while the 14-inch ThinkPad T460s was said to deliver the same performance but measuring just 18.8mm thin and weighing under 3 pounds (roughly 1.3 kgs). The laptop is made for business professionals. The ThinkPad T460p sports a QHD IPS display; supports up to 32GB of storage; DDR4 RAM; and comes powered by a choice of 6th generation Intel Core ‘H-Series’ processors.

lenovo_thinkpad_w700ds.jpgThe Lenovo ThinkPad X260 is a 12-inch Ultrabook that’s claimed to deliver up to 21 hours of work time with an optional battery. The ThinkPad L460 and L560 were touted for their Mil-Spec durability and “ThinkPad confidence within a high-value package.”

For students, Lenovo launched its ThinkPad 13 with a choice of Chrome OS and Windows 10. The device features USB Type-C port; up to 512GB of SSD storage, and up to 16GB memory on the Windows model. It also is said to be the first ThinkPad device to support Chrome for Business. Both ship with 6th-gen Intel Core i5 processors

The ThinkVision X24 Pro monitor comes with an integrated Intel 3D RealSense camera and multiple ports including USB Type-C. It can be clubbed with optional accessories for increased productivity. The company additionally announced its 2 nd generation ThinkCentre-in-One 22 and 24 models that will be available in 21.5-inch and 23.8-inch configurations. Both will also be available in touchscreen options.

As for the Yoga 900 Business Edition and MIIX 700 Business Edition, Lenovo says they carry the same design as their consumer-versions but include security features with a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chip and extended warranty options. The MIIX 700 Business Edition 2-in-1 includes a 12-inch 2160×1440 pixel tablet display with Gorilla Glass. It also features an Intel RealSense R200 3D camera.

PIB Website to Be Revamped; Officials to Get Smartphones, Laptops

Officials of the Press Information Bureau are being provided smartphones and laptops to enable them to effectively use technology for dissemination of information, the government Tuesday said, which is also revamping the PIB’s website.

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said adequate provisions have been made in the scheme ‘Modernisation of PIB’ to equip the officers with laptops and smartphones.

“PIB’s officers are being equipped with laptops/ smartphones to enable them to effectively use Information Technology to disseminate information,” Rathore said in his reply.

He also said that PIB’s website is also being revamped. He further said that video-conferencing facilities are also being installed to carry out the live-streaming of press conferences by important newsmakers.

The minister was responding to a question on the use of state-of-the-art technology by various departments under the I&B ministry.

PIB was unfortunately most recently in the news for ‘Photoshopping’ an image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It caused a storm in a teacup as people on social media observed that it had clearly been edited. A statement issued by the PIB later clarified that this was done in error, and was regrettable. However, while the statement called it an error of judgement that led to images being merged, it looks like this might actually be a fairly standard practice, as another image from the PIB archive appears to be an edited image of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

New Apple iPad Pro review roundup: not quite ready to replace laptops

The early reviews of the Apple iPad Pro 11 and iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) are out, but they are a little reluctant to render a final verdict. The tablets (the big one especially with 1TB of storage) can cost a ton of money and they feature several fundamental changes, so more time is needed for definitive conclusions.

Here are some of the early impressions that agree on some points, though not all. The new Pencil and keyboard, the USB-C port and the new chipset are almost universally praised, but Apple’s new tablet still falls short of perfection in some cases.

Engadget points out that USB-C can be a game changer – the accessories you use on your Mac (e.g. a USB microphone can be used in Garageband) now work on the tablet with no adapters. Speaking of accessories, Engadget’s review was written on the Smart Keyboard Folio.

The Verge is similarly excited by USB-C, but highlights a flaw – iOS doesn’t support USB storage out of the box. Also, the port can only do one thing at a time, so you need Bluetooth headphones if using the speakers isn’t an option. The magnetic charging system of the new Pencil is great, the double tap gesture less so. Apparently artists are more used to having a button on the side.

TechCrunch disagrees and says that the double tap gesture feels natural. The keyboard proved stable and was “approved for lap use”, which is something to consider when looking at the new MacBook Air. The Pencil and keyboard were rated so highly, that TechCrunch believes your’e not getting the full iPad Pro experience without them.

LaptopMag wasn’t impressed with the 64GB base storage, the lack of a touchpad also impacts the Pro’s ability to replace a laptop. That said, that the A12X Bionic chipset is so powerful that it outperformed Core i7-based laptops in some tasks (while being thinner and lighter and offering great battery life to boot).

Wired sees the new iPad Pros as a possible but limited replacement for laptops. Multitasking, even on the larger screen, still isn’t up to par. Wired found the keyboard to be wobbly, counter to other reviewer’s impressions.

CNET also sees the accessories as necessary, but bemoans how quickly the costs add up. Software limitations and having a single port make the price harder to swallow. Face ID performance was described as “scary fast”.

Pocket-Lint found that iOS 12.1 is holding the new iPad Pros back from being proper MacBook replacements. User experience can vary quite a bit – e.g. connecting an external hard drive is possible, but unless you have the right app, you can even access the file directory. Multitasking is not on Mac OS X level yet, despite support for external 5K monitors.

Mashable is impressed by Face ID’s ability to work in any orientation (and questions why the new iPhone’s can’t do that as well), but notes a potential issue – depending on how you hold the tablet, you can cover up the TrueDepth camera with your hand.

Acer Launches 'Avengers: Infinity War' Special Edition Laptops in India

Acer has tied up with Marvel Studios for the launch of three special edition laptops in India, which are inspired from characters from the upcoming movie, Avengers: Infinity War. The laptops include the Captain America Edition of the Aspire 6 which is priced at Rs. 63,999; a Thanos Edition of the Nitro 5 at Rs. 80,999, and an Iron Man Edition of the Swift 3 that costs Rs. 79,999. All three laptops will be available through offline stores like Croma, Reliance Digital and Acer Exclusive stores starting April 20. You’ll also be able to find them online exclusively on Amazon India from April 23.

The Aspire 6 – Captain America Edition features an aluminium lid with Captain America’s iconic pentagram. It’s powered by an Intel 8th Gen Core i5-8250U CPU and comes with 8GB of DDR4 RAM which is user upgradable, 1TB hard drive, an Nvidia GeForce MX150 GPU and a HD webcam. The laptop also gets Dolby Audio enhancement for the stereo speakers and wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 802.11 ac with 2×2 MIMO antennas and Gigabit LAN. You get a 15.6-inch Full-HD IPS display and physical connectivity like USB Type-C (USB 3.1 Gen1), standard USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports.

Coming to the Nitro 5 – Thanos Edition, this gaming laptop features a portrait of Thanos on the lid which uses IMR technology (In-Mold Roller) for a durable finish. Other specifications include a 7th Gen Intel Core i5-7300HQ CPU, 8GB of DDR4 RAM that’s user upgradable to 32GB, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 with 4GB of GDDR5 VRAM, 128GB SSD plus a 1TB hard drive. You get a 15.6-inch Full-HD IPS display and dual exhaust fans with Acer’s Coolboost technology.

Finally, we have the Swift 3 – Iron Man Edition which weighs just 1.6kg and measures 17.95mm in thickness. The red coloured laptop features Iron Man’s signature arc reactor on the lid, which also glows when the laptop is powered on. This special edition Swift 3 uses an Intel Core i5-8250U CPU and features 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, onboard graphics, and a battery that’s said to last up to 10 hours. You also get a 14-inch full-HD IPS display, Type-C port and Wi-Fi 802.11 ac.

Commenting on the launch, Chandrahas Panigrahi, CMO and Consumer Business Head, Acer, India, said, “We’re excited to work again with Disney Consumer Products and Marvel to bring technology even closer to consumers through their favourite characters. The Pixar 30th Anniversary Toy Story special edition of the Acer Aspire V13 we launched in 2017 was a huge success. With the new series of notebooks, we hope to engage fans of the Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe; as well as users who are looking for a versatile notebook for work, for entertainment, and for exceptional gaming experience”.
