Apple has started blogging to draw attention to its AI work

After years of near-silence, Apple is slowly starting to make a bit of noise about its work on artificial intelligence. Last December the iPhone maker shared its first public research paperon the topic; this June it announced new tools to speed up machine learning on the iPhone; and today it started blogging. Sort of.

The company’s new website, titled “Apple Machine Learning Journal,” is a bit grander than a blog. But it looks like it will have the same basic function: keeping readers up to date in a relatively accessible manner. “Here, you can read posts written by Apple engineers about their work using machine learning technologies,” says the opening post, before inviting feedback from researchers, students, and developers.

As the perennial question for bloggers goes, however: what’s the point? What are you trying to achieve? The answer is familiar: Apple wants more attention.

It’s clear that the recent focus on AI in the world of tech hasn’t been kind to the iPhone maker. The company is perceived as lagging behind competitors like Google and Facebook, both in terms of attracting talent and shipping products. Other tech companies regularly publish new and exciting research, which makes headlines and gets researchers excited to work for them. Starting a blog doesn’t do much to counter the tide of new work coming out of somewhere like DeepMind, but it is another small step into public life. Notably, at the bottom of Apple’s new blog, prominently displayed, is a link to the company’s jobs site, encouraging readers to apply now.

What’s most interesting, though, is the blog’s actual content. The first post (actually a re-post of the paper the company published last December, but with simpler language) deals with one of the core weaknesses of Apple’s AI approach: its lack of data.

Companies like Google, Amazon, and Facebook have access to a lot of user data, but Apple, with its philosophy of not snooping on customers — in favor of charging megabucks for hardware — has rather tied its hands in that regard. Putin wants his spies to work closer with US intelligence agencies

President Vladimir Putin says he wants to work towards “restoring dialogue” between Russian and US intelligence agencies.

“It’s absolutely clear that in the area of counterterrorism all relevant governments and international groups should work together,” he said.

“It’s in everyone’s interest to resume dialogue between the intelligence agencies of the United States and other members of NATO.”

At the same time he complained that NATO “is constantly provoking us and trying to draw us into confrontation”.

And he said last year the activities of more than 400 foreign special agents had been stopped.

US defence secretary James Mattis says there is “very little doubt” that Russia has interfered or attempted to interfere in a number of elections.

But in November President Donald Trump praised his Russian counterpart for being “very smart” for not engaging in a tit-for-tat row with the US after the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats accused of spying.

And both Mr Putin and Mr Trump have played down a dossier compiled by a former MI6 agent that emerged in January, shortly before he was due to enter the White House.

In the document, former British spy Christopher Steele alleged that the Kremlin colluded with Mr Trump’s presidential campaign and that the Russian security services had material that could be used to blackmail him.

Mr Trump has an uneasy relationship with his own intelligence services after accusing them of allowing the release of what he called “false information”.

Rather than blame Moscow, Mr Trump has directed his anger at those doing the leaking.

“The spotlight has finally been put on the low-life leakers! They will be caught!,” he tweeted.

Russia’s defence minister has warned Washington not to try to negotiate with Moscow “from a position of strength” ahead of the first meeting between their military chiefs since Mr Trump took office.

“We are ready to restore co-operation with the Pentagon,” Sergei Shoigu said in a statement.

“But attempts to build a dialogue from a position of strength in relation to Russia have no prospects.”

Mr Shoigu was responding to a comment to NATO by Mr Mattis when he said Washington wanted to make sure its diplomats had the upper hand in any talks with Russia.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Angela Merkel has told a parliamentary committee examining alleged US surveillance in Germany that “spying among friends” is unacceptable.

Tesco Bank Cyber-Attack Said to Involve 'Guessing Attack' That Can Work Out Visa Card Details

It can take hackers just six seconds, a laptop and an internet connection to hack any Visa credit or debit card, researchers claim.

The research paper (via The Guardian), published in the journal “IEEE Security and Privacy”, said that the “distributed guessing attack” circumvents all the security features put in place to protect online payments from fraud.

Neither the network nor the banks are able to detect attackers making multiple, invalid attempts to get payment card data, researchers claim.

The current online payment system does not detect multiple invalid payment requests from different websites.

This allows unlimited guesses on each card data field, using up to the allowed number of attempts – typically 10 or 20 guesses – on each website, explained Mohammed Ali, a PhD student in Newcastle University.

“Different websites ask for different variations in the card data fields to validate an online purchase… This means it’s quite easy to build up the information and piece it together like a jigsaw,” Ali added.
The combination of these two factors – unlimited guesses and variation in the payment data fields – makes it easy for attackers to hack all the card details.

Each generated card field can be used in succession to generate the next field and so on.

“If the hits are spread across enough websites then a positive response to each question can be received within two seconds – just like any online payment,” Ali warned.

The researchers explained that even starting with no details at all other than the first six digits – which tell you the bank and card type – a hacker can obtain essential pieces of information.

These are – card number, expiry date and security code – to make an online purchase within as little as six seconds.

Researchers believe this ‘guessing attack’ method could have been used in the recent Tesco cyber-attack where the hackers defrauded customers of GBP 2.5 million.

The risk is higher at this time of the year as many people are making online purchases ahead of Christmas.

However, researchers found that unlike Visa cards, MasterCard’s centralised network was able to detect the guessing attack after less than 10 attempts – even when those payments were distributed across multiple networks.

The researchers suggested that to minimise the chances of hacking, card-holders should use just one card for online payments and keep the spending limit on that account as low as possible.

“If it’s a bank card then keep ready funds to a minimum and transfer over money as you need it,” said Martin Emms, co-author of the research.

ICANN, which matches domain names with appropriate IP address numbers, is hosting its 57th meeting here from November 3-9. ICANN was given baton to take over the task of assigning web addresses from the USA’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration.

“With the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) stewardship transmission behind us, our top priority now is to focus on our revised mission and new bylaws and working with the empowered community. Expanding our outreach is key to our mission.

In this context, we are keen to further deepen our ongoing engagement in India. As the second largest group of Internet users globally, we welcome India’s voice and participation,” Marby said in his address during the inaugural session. Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad said India has supported the multi stakeholder model of Internet governance.

ICANN will work with India’s stakeholders, including the Centre, to develop a structured framework focusing on fostering the development of the DNS (Domain Name System) industry in India.
The framework will concentrate on capacity building for India’s stakeholders, gearing them up for active participation of all stakeholder model of Internet governance, ICANN said. ICANN 57 is the first post stewardship transition public meeting and also first annual general meeting under the new meetings strategy.
Telangana Minister of IT and Industries KT Rama Rao said the state government has embarked on a novel initiative to provide fiber optic connectivity along with drinking water pipelines to households across the state.

Holding onto things that you used for all jobs is practical because you may need them again in the future. Google Cloud Division Announced; Google Apps for Work Rebranded to G Suite

Google repackaged its cloud services and corporate software and hardware offerings into a new unit called Google Cloud on Thursday, the Internet search provider’s latest attempt to catch leaders in the sector Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

The new group, run by Google executive Diane Greene, includes web-based work software such as Docs and Sheets, machine-learning and digital-mapping tools that other companies can rent over the Internet, and Android phones, tablets and Chromebook laptops designed for office users, Google said in a statement.

“It’s uniquely Google – a broad set of technologies and products from all parts of the cloud,” Greene said at a company event in San Francisco.

Google’s work software, renamed G Suite, has been around for years and is popular with individuals, startups and other smaller companies. While these programs have always been offered over the web, they weren’t delivered as part of a broader cloud computing service. Greene is combining them to offer a fuller range of services to companies looking to move applications and other work functions to cheaper, more flexible rented data centers.

Google also said Thursday its cloud service now has more than one billion end-users, through the products and services that other companies run on its servers. And Urs Holzle, Google’s longtime infrastructure boss, said Google had invested $11.2 billion (roughly Rs. 74,669 crores) on its cloud division over the past twelve months. He didn’t share revenue numbers.

Greene’s new division has considerable ground to make up. Amazon’s cloud business generated close to $8 billion (roughly Rs. 53,340 crores) in sales in 2015 and posted a 58 percent revenue increase in the most-recent quarter. Microsoft’s Azure cloud revenue doubled in the second quarter. Google is fourth in cloud services behind Amazon, Microsoft and International Business Machines Corp., according to Synergy Research Group. Microsoft also leads in work software still, and it’s Office 365 web-based software suite is popular.

On Thursday, Google unveiled new locations for its rentable servers in Mumbai, Singapore, Sydney, Northern Virginia, Sao Paulo, London, Finland and Frankfurt. More regions will be announced next year, it said.

Google also said it had picked up two new cloud customers, retailer The Home Depot Inc. and Pokemon Go, the viral mobile game. Over the last year, Google has pushed aggressively to woo larger cloud clients, which have in the past mostly gone to Amazon, Microsoft or used their own computer servers and data centers.

Google also introduced a new customer support unit within its cloud division, called Customer Reliability Engineering. Google engineers will work closely with other companies’ operations teams to make sure important cloud applications run reliably, Google said. It’s a necessary upgrade. Despite its technical prowess, Google has faced criticism for not managing customer relations as carefully as competitors like Amazon.

Greene, a Silicon Valley veteran and Google board member, joined the search provider full time in November to revamp its cloud and corporate software efforts. Since then, she has hired more sales and marketing staff and presided over several acquisitions, including the recent $625 million purchase of software developer Apigee.

Greene’s early work has started to show up in Google’s bottom line. Parent company Alphabet Inc. reported in July that “Other” revenue rose 33 percent to a record $2.17 billion in the second quarter, driven by cloud and corporate software businesses.

Amazon Said to Be Piloting Teams With a 30-Hour Work Week

Amazon.com will soon launch a program to experiment with a 30-hour workweek for select employees.

The program will have a few technical teams made up entirely of part-time workers. These 30-hour employees will be salaried and receive the same benefits as traditional 40-hour workers, but they will receive only 75 percent of the pay full-time workers earn. Currently, the company already employs part-time workers that share the same benefits as full-time workers. However, the pilot program would differ in that an entire team, including managers, would work reduced hours.

“We want to create a work environment that is tailored to a reduced schedule and still fosters success and career growth,” states a posting by the company on Eventbrite.com for an informational seminar. “This initiative was created with Amazon’s diverse workforce in mind and the realization that the traditional full-time schedule may not be a “one size fits all” model.”

Currently, the pilot program will be small, consisting of a few dozen people. These teams will work on tech products within the Human Resources division of the company, working from Monday through Thursday from 10am to 2pm, with additional flex hours. Their salaries will be lower than 40-hour workers, however they will have the option to transition to full-time if they choose. Team members will be hired from both inside and outside the company. As of now, Amazon does not have plans to alter the 40-hour workweek on a company-wide level, the spokesperson said.

The announcement comes a year after the company faced criticism after a New York Times report described Amazon as a company that encouraged employees to work upwards of 80 hours a week while rarely taking vacation. Amazon senior vice president Jay Carney published a response letter on Medium saying that the story “misrepresented” the company.

Amazon did not comment on whether this program was in relation to the New York Times report.

“[The article] was a huge blow, from an employer attractiveness point of view,” said Rita McGrath, a professor at Columbia Business School who focuses on strategy and innovation. Piloting reduced hours could be the company’s latest experiment with ways to attract top talent, she said. “Amazon is constantly pushing and trying new things as a company. They fail a lot, but it’s worth it to stay innovative.”

Many companies such as Deloitte and KPMG offer four-day workweeks with flex hours, but stick to the standard 40-hour expectation. “A lot of companies have talked about wanting to lower hours, but don’t seem to actually go about doing it,” said Ellen Galinsky, president and founder of the Families and Work Institute.

Galinsky hopes that a company as big as Amazon, if they successfully roll out the program, can help break the taboo associated with reduced hours. “There has for a very long time been a stigma against working reduced hours, or part-time work,” she said. “Even names like that, ‘part-time’ or ‘reduced’ make it seem like a deviation from the norm, like you’re doing less.”

The program could also help to tackle Amazon’s diversity problem. Along with other top tech firms, Amazon has had trouble balancing its female-to-male worker ratio, especially in areas of leadership, where men make up 76 percent of management positions across the company globally. A 30-hour work week could help encourage more female workers, who tend to take on more household and childcare responsibilities than men in the domestic sphere.

Amazon did not comment on whether the program is an attempt to diversify its staff. But McGrath points out that wanting diverse employees has pragmatic advantages. “Amazon isn’t very good at promoting and keeping women, and the irony is that Amazon’s customer base is very diverse,” said McGrath. “So you have this kind of deaf ear in tech to this vital group of customers.”

“It offers an opportunity to tap into people that you wouldn’t normally because of the way you structure your work week,” she said.
