Affiliate marketing — in which online retailers pay commissions to other sites for traffic or sales prompted by those others’ referrals — has come a long way from its humble beginnings.

Before Amazon popularized the concept  in 1996, William J. Topin, founder of PC Flowers & Gifts, had already set himself up nicely by starting his own affiliate-marketing campaign.

By 1993, PC Flowers & Gifts was bringing in annual revenue north of $6 million dollars.

Since J. Topin and Amazon, this performance-based marketing strategy has spread and evolved into an industry of its own. Over the years, we have witnessed many marketing models, such as CPM (cost per impression), CPC (cost per click), CPA (cost per action) and  pay per sale. Advertisers know what content their audience needs and can create it themselves. However, they have quickly discovered that trying to create and distribute such content on their own can seriously deplete their resources without having the desired return on investment.

Affiliate networks, therefore, make it easy for these advertisers to link up with relevant publishers. Advertisers can outsource the bulk of their content-marketing responsibilities to these publishers while gaining a larger targeted audience that would have been inaccessible without that publisher relationship.

What’s in it for the publishers? The simple answer is revenue. According to this Business Insider report, commissions from affiliate marketing endeavors are the fastest avenue of revenue growth for publishers, making up 15 percent of their revenue — thanks to those affiliate networks making access to deals easier.

The future

So, how are affiliate networks positioning themselves for the future? In our fast-paced and constantly evolving digital world, it’s suicide for any business to sit and bask in its previous success. Affiliate networks understand this and are constantly tweaking their offerings to remain relevant and enticing to publishers and advertisers alike.

According to the above-mentioned Forrester Group survey, publishers particularly love to seek affiliate deals through networks that are global in their perspective. Affiliate networks are responding by seeking to broker exclusive deals with global brands in order to sweeten the deal for publishers and to stand out.

Where startups fit in

The need for networks to constantly adjust and tweak their offerings has left the door wide open for newcomers to the industry to establish and perhaps gain some market share from industry heavy-weights, like ShareASale and CJ Affiliate.

A recent example is Alexander Bachmann’s admitad, a known European affiliate network that has recently expanded aggressively into North America and Asia. The company is obviously seeking to position itself as a technologically preferred option, as it works on developing technological priorities in the area of fraud prevention, fingerprint and cross-device tracking, ad-block technology and more.

Publishers and advertisers still have to be wary, though, of these networks, both new and old, as they experiment with new technology and features to improve what they have to sell.

Kodi users are being urged to download the latest update after the team behind the popular service deemed it necessary to push out a new release.

The new v17.3 software has been launched just a few days after fans of the service were told to upgrade to v17.2.

Kodi says that it felt it necessary to quickly launch another upgrade to sort some minor bug and security issues.

Along with these fixes the new software includes a patch which stops malicious subtitle zip files that could potentially infect and harm users’ media players.

It was claimed by security company, Check Point, that Hackers could take control of a computer, smartphone, tablet or smart TV by manipulating subtitle text files.

In statement on their blog Kodi said: “Our developers fixed this secuity gap and have added the fix to this v17.2 release.

“As such we highly encourage all users to install this latest version!

“Any previous Kodi version will not get any security patch.

“We have began the roll out of this version and Android Play Store as well as Windows Store have this update pending and will roll out as soon as possible.”

The news of this latest Kodi upgrade comes as the company have announced an early test build of version 18 is now live.

How does the Kodi box work?

Codenamed Leia, this latest developer build brings a host of improvements to the online video player including voice search and better integration with Android TV.

Announcing the news on their blog, Kodi’s Martijn Kaijser, said: “At times you do wonder what else could still be added to Kodi as it has been made quite feature complete over the past years.

“Well I can assure you this and several other upcoming features will make your Kodi experience from the couch even more awesome than it already was.”

Part of the version 18 update means that, for the first time, all Android TV users can now see their Kodi library content directly on the main home screen.

Along with this there’s also full voice and search integration in the Leia upgrade and users can now use the Google voice search to trawl through their Kodi library straight from the Android screen.

Another nice feature included in the update is the ability to search without having to type on the remote control.

Version 18 uses voice for text typing with users simply able to dictate their search directly into the TV.

Education and schools are less likely to be named as important than unemployment and housing, Ipsos MORI poll finds

Only 1 per cent of the public considers education to be the most important issue facing Britain today, according to a new poll.

Nearly half of respondents (49 per cent) surveyed in January said the NHS was one of the important issues facing Britain, while 17 per cent saw it as the most important issue, according to the Economist/Ipsos MORI findings.

But only 15 per cited education/schools as one of the important issues – a 3 per cent drop since December – and just 1 per cent viewed it as the most important issue. This was despite a succession of warnings about the state of school finances and the potential impact on pupils’ education.

The findings follow a TES analysis looking at why school cuts are hitting the headlines less frequently than the pressures facing the NHS.

Respondents were asked two questions: “What would you say is the most important issue facing Britain today?” and “What do you see as the main/other issues facing Britain today?”. Their spontaneous, unprompted responses were then noted down.

Apart from the NHS, “the common market/Brexit/the EU/Europe” was the second most popular choice for the most important issue. This was followed by “immigration/immigrants” then “the economy”, “housing” and “unemployment”. These were all more likely than education to be named as an important issue.

Education is a ‘mid-tier issue’

Out of the 10 topics most likely to be mentioned by respondents as being important, “education/schools” was the least likely to be seen as the “most important” issue overall. For the poll, the 970 respondents were chosen as a representative sample of the general population.

Education appeared to be higher on the agenda of Labour supporters than Conservative Party supporters. Some 19 per cent of Labour supporters said it was important, compared with 12 per cent of Tory supporters.

A graph accompanying the poll findings shows that the importance of education in the eyes of the public has plummeted since May 1997, when Tony Blair’s Labour Party won the general election after campaigning for “education education education” and nearly half of people felt it was an important issue facing Britain.

Since then, the lowest point came in May 2009, when only 9 per cent of people said education was important.

Jonathan Simons, director of policy and advocacy at the Varkey Foundation, said: “People can only worry about so many things at once. As certain things become more important, by default other things become less important.”

In response to questions such as those posed by Ipsos MORI, nearly everyone would mention a maximum of three issues, he said, meaning that if the NHS and Brexit were constantly hitting headlines there was limited “space” in people’s minds for education.

He added that, historically, education has been “a mid-tier issue”. Apart from some notable exceptions, such as Labour’s former education secretary Ed Balls, education secretaries have nearly always tended to be younger, up-and-coming politicians, or people heading towards the end of their careers, he said.

Mr Simons could only see education reappearing high up people’s agendas in the event of a “long, sustained” campaign by Prime Minister Theresa May that lasted for several months and resulted in much stronger media coverage of the issues facing schools.

Sarah Kitchen, research director in the children and young people team at NatCen Social Research, tweeted that the findings may be down to the fact that education has a direct impact on fewer people.

‘Important issues’ raised over academies, says Nicky Morgan

But Ms Morgan said she was confident the proposals, outlined in a White Paper, would go through – despite some opposition from within her own party.

Last week, some Conservative backbenchers raised doubts about the government’s plan to force all schools in England to become academies.

MPs expressed concerns about the lack of choice and fears for the implications for rural schools.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live on Tuesday, Ms Morgan said colleagues had raised some important issues.

But she maintained repeatedly that there was “widespread support” for the academy plans.

“What I do know is that there is widespread support on Conservative benches – and elsewhere I might add – for schools becoming academies,” she said.

“Now this is a White Paper, it’s perfectly legitimate for Members of Parliament to ask questions, to clarify how our proposals are going to work for schools in their area, how it ties in with other reforms we’re making, like changes to the national funding formula.

“Rightly we will, of course, continue discussions about specific elements of the White Paper, but yes, I’m absolutely confident there is very, very broad support for our policy of schools becoming academies.”

Ms Morgan said education was “the great transformer” and said the White Paper was “about a lot more” than academy conversions and also focused on standards and finding good teachers.

“We all want to end up in the same place, which is great schools for our children.”

If the plans become law, all state schools in England – both primary and secondary – would need to become an academy by 2020 or have plans in place to become so by 2022.

Academy status, introduced by a Labour government, was originally reserved for schools in urgent need of improvement, but since 2010, schools have been encouraged to convert and have been given extra funding for doing so.

Currently, 2,075 out of 3,381 secondary schools are academies, while 2,440 of 16,766 primary schools have academy status.
