Delhi University admissions: Admissions for NCWEB third cut-off list begin

Delhi University NCWEB admissionsThe admissions under the Non Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB) third cut-off list has begun. The students can take admissions from July 22 to 24, for the same. They are required to report to the college of their choice between 10 am to 3 pm on any of the three days.

The third cut-off list of Non Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB) was released by Delhi University on July 20. The students can check the cut-off scores for B.A. and B.Com programmes at the official site.

NCWEB is offering a total of 284 seats for B.A programme and 184 seats for B.Com across all the centres. The Board conducts programmes at both, undergraduate and post graduate level. The classes for undergraduate courses will be held at Hansraj College, Vivekananda College, Jesus & Mary College, Maitreyi College, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, PGDAV College, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College, Maharaja Agrasen College, Janki Devi Memorial College, Lakshmi Bai College, Mata Sundri College and Bharati College.

NCWEB conducts the programmes only form women residing in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It conducts classes over the weekends, for female students who cannot pursue a regular course. Students who study at NCWEB are not allowed to take up any other full-time degree or cours

IIT admissions 2015: Seat allocation for preparatory courses begins

IIT Admissions 2015The seat allocation process for preparatory courses at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has begun today i.e. July 22. The candidates will be allotted seats today. The candidates will be allowed to accept the seats and go to their respective reporting centres, starting at 10 am on July 23 up till 5 pm on July 26.

The third round of seat allotment for admissions to IITs, NITs and various other technology institutes was concluded on July 21. The admission process is being conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) for JEE Main Paper I and Paper II and JEE Advanced 2015.

The candidates who were allotted a seat in any round of seat allocation and had reported at their designated centre too, but wish to change their sliding option to floating or freeze or vice-versa can report to the same centre, with a new undertaking stating their choice. They are required to carry a confirmation of document verification, round two allotment letter and their JEE Main 2015 admit card.

The students who get a seat are required to report to their respective centres for admission to IITs and NITs. If the candidates fail to do so, then they will be excluded from the admission process and won’t be eligible to participate in the subsequent allotment rounds either.

If the students choose to ‘freeze’ the seat, then they won’t be allowed to make any changes in the seat allocation rounds further, however, if they wish to keep their options open for an upgrade, they need to select the ‘floating’ option. If the students want a course upgrade at the same institute where they were allotted the seat, they will have to choose the sliding option.

There are a total of 87 participating institutes, 17 are Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), 31 are National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 18 are Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), 18 are Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs) and Indian School of Mines (ISM).

Delhi University begins the counselling session for Kashmiri migrants for the academic session 2015-2016

With the sixth cut-off list release by the Delhi University, the announcement regarding the counselling session for the undergraduate courses for Kashmiri migrants have been made. This announcement has been made for those students who have registered for admissions as Kashmiri Migrants for the academic session 2015-2016.

As per the official notification, those applicants who have been registered for admission to the undergraduate courses for the year 2015-2016 as Kashmiri migrants, but have not been allotted any seat in any institute for admission are required to contact the Academic Branch-I, Room No. 218, New Administrative Block.

The counselling was held on July 21 at Delhi University’s Academic Branch-I, room no. 218, New Administrative Block comprising for four sessions. The first round took place at 10 am, the second at 11 am and the rest at 12 noon and 2 pm subsequently. There were 115 students from the Kashmiri Migrant category who took part in this counselling process.

Delhi University comprises of some of the most sought after colleges in India and is famous for its academics, sports and cultural activities. Admissions are on at the university and candidates can register themselves either online at www.du.ac.in or offline by completing OMR forms and submitting them at Admission Information Centers in Delhi

IIT-Delhi in a controversy over Baba Ramdev’s invitation

IIT Delhi controversy The Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi is surrounded by a controversy, yet again. The decision to invite yoga guru Baba Ramdev and an RSS affiliate to deliberate on a plan for the development of rural areas has costed the IIT its reputation and has turned the spotlight on the government’s agenda of saffronising education, again.

Vijay Bhatkar, chairperson of IIT-Delhi Board of Governors called in for a meeting with Ramdev and members of RSS’ Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram for the implementation of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan in January this year. The meeting raised a controversial stir in the society, when the involvement of cows to address rural issues, came up.

While Union HRD minister Smriti Irani had consistently denied saffronisation of education, yesterday she held deliberations with RSS affiliated bodies on the new education policy during the officials also discussed the appointments of possible candidates in various institutes and universities in the country.

Citing a mere collaboration as the reason behind Baba Ramdev’s visit, professors have saud that they have infact collaborated with over 100 agencies and spiritual gurus in a mission to work for the rural progress.

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, is an HRD ministry scheme anchored by IIT Delhi, and seeks to build the technical strength of the IITs to help the rural India through tech intervention.

Play, practice and perform: Re Shakespeare app to make Shakespeare readings more entertaining

Re:Shakespeare app launchedAn exciting and fun app has been launched for Shakespeare lovers, that would provide them with a live stage experience. The app called Re: Shakespeare, is a joint effort of Samsung and UK’s Royal Shakespeare Company, which will let students lip-sync favourite lines from Shakespeare’s different plays and mix beatbox rhythms with the Bard’s text.

Your cell’s camera and microphone would be required for full functioning of this android app which is hosted by actor David Tennant. This app is basically designed for the age group 11 to 18 and focusses on his famous play ‘Much Ado about Nothing’. It is basically a virtual reality version of his Much Ado About Nothing play.

The app contains 19 other plays by Shakespeare and is an apt app for students, teachers, theatre artists and other. According to RSC’s director of education Jacqui O’Hanlon, the app sets Shakespeare alongside contemporary artists doing the most extraordinary things with language.

From September onwards, this app will be offered as a support to schools.

The app also includes videos and interactive games and the video content has been filmed using 360 degree cameras for the first time on an RSC stage. The app will take users into a 3 interactive session ride namely, play, practice and perform. All these stages would offer an altogether different learning experience.You can find this app on Google Play and it requires Jelly Bean 4.3 APIs 14 or a newer version of android to function.

GMAT 2015: Candidates to get an option to cancel scores

GMAT exam rules changed The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) made an official announcement regarding the set of changes being introduced in the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) 2015. The official website made the declaration on July 19.

The announcement laid down new rules under which the GMAT aspirants will now be permitted to appear for the re-test after a mere 16-day gap rather than the earlier 31-day retake period. This feature will let the students retake the test within a shorter time span to accommodate their schedules and study pattern in a much better way.

The candidates will also be allowed to view an ‘Official Score Report’ using their Date of Birth and will also not have their cancelled scores mentioned in the report cards. A feature called ‘Score Preview’ will allow the test-takers to preview the unofficial scores, before they can decide to report or cancel them.
All score cancellations that have been made before July 19 will not feature in score reports sent to institutes. However, score reports which have already been sent to institutes cannot be modified. For those candidates, a period of 60 days would be granted to reinstate a cancelled score.

The changes are being introduced as control and confidence building measures and are based on feedback from the candidates.

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) exam is a computer based evaluation that judges your verbal, mathematical, integrated reasoning, and analytical writing skills. The exam comprises of four sections which includes analytical writing assessment, integrated reasoning, quantitative and verbal.

Smriti Irani meets with RSS bodies: New Education Policy in the pipeline

Smriti Irani meets with RSS bodies A meeting was conducted by the Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani to hold deliberations with the functionaries of a few RSS-affiliated education bodies regarding a new education policy.

Sources said during the deliberations, RSS functionaries put forth a list of candidates to be appointed in centrally funded educational institutions, where the seats for it are lying vacant. Points were also raised about giving importance to a revamped education system which instills nationalism, pride and ancient Indian values through the medium of modern education.

The meeting was consumed by debates on whom to appoint at a particular institution as representative for education and knowledge.  Few education bodies came out with resolutions recently to support new changes in the curriculum, as well.

A draft outline was created by the Bhartiya Shikshan Mandal, an RSS body promoting the idea of teaching the mother tongue and classical languages such as Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian among others.The draft titled ‘Bhartiya Education Outline’ proposed the idea of compulsory study of one economic activity based subject after eight years of primary education.

The Dinanath Batra-headed Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas had proposed introduction of vedic maths in schools across the country in the month of June.

IIT admissions 2015: All 903 seats at IIT Bombay taken in the second round of allotment

IIT BombayThe second round of joint seat allocation for admissions to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and other technology institutions was concluded on July 17. With the second round of allotment, all 903 seats offered by IIT Bombay were filled up.

After this round, a total of 82 seats were still available across the 18 IITs, there are expected to be filled up in the third round of seat allocation, which began on July 18.

After the second round of joint seat allocation, there was one seat available at IIT Delhi, two at IIT Kanpur and six at IIT Chennai. A total of 10,006 seats are offered by all the IITs combined, the institutes have filled up 99 percent of their seats by the second round of allotment.

Out of the remaining seats, 32 are from ISM Dhanbad, 13 are available at IIT Kharagpur, 35 are from IIT- Banaras Hindu University. There is one seat each available at the institutes in Ropar, Jodhpur, Mandi and Bhubaneshwar. IIT Tirupati and Palakkad, which are starting their academic sessions this year, have only three and nine seats available, respectively.

About 1,000 candidates have been given the option to opt for a better seat in the third round of joint seat allocation. Also, few admissions were cancelled as the students did not meet the eligibility criteria for Class 12 marks or  due to lack of certificates.

Although the admissions to IITs are expected to be over by the third round of allotment, the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs will hold a fourth round of allotment to fill up the remaining 3,700 seats.

Delhi University new session begins; CBCS faces no opposition

New DU academic session begins Delhi University finally began with its new undergraduate academic session with a batch of students who will be the first to study courses under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).

Most students were seen getting curious about the much talked about CBCS since it is expected to reduce the workload realistically. The new system will not only reduce the time spent in lectures or seminars but also the time students need for individual learning and the preparation of examinations,  which students feel  this will prove to be better than studying the other universities.

The Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh visited colleges and interacted with students about the newly -implemented credit system and about their future plans.
A session of Q & A was conducted with the freshers to address all the queries they had regarding the courses to the societies they could be a part of, transport service in the university among others. Amidst all the questions asked, there was not a single query addressed towards CBCS.  The students were, however, excited about the “cafeteria-approach” scheme rolled out by the UGC from this academic session.

The students were also informed about a CBCS Oversight Committee, to be headed by the Dean, Faculty of Science for its smooth implementation.
There are other universities that have been offering the Choice Based Credit System to students. Amity University in Noida, Ashoka University, Shiva Nadar University, Jawaharlal University, are among the few varsities who have been running successfully with the choice based system.
