Lenovo Executive Says Google Play Services Coming to China in 2016

Google is planning to reintroduce Google Play Services to China this year, according to one of its partners. Chen Xudong, Senior Vice President of Lenovo Group and President of the Lenovo Mobile Business Group, laid bare the Mountain View company’s plan. Google had pulled most of its products and services out of the country in January 2010.

Chen (via 9to5Google) said that Google plans to re-enter the world’s most populous nation at some point this year with Google Play Services. He didn’t share a firm time-line, however. He also didn’t share any other details on the matter.

Reuters reported in November that Google was aiming to launch the China version of the Google Play in 2016. According to publication’s sources, the search giant was working on building an app store that was not connected to the overseas versions of Google Play. The report added that Google would use the app and content store as the launch pad for bringing its other products and services in the country.

When Google pulled its services out of China in 2010, it cited unwillingness to comply with the local government’s censorship laws as the reason behind the strategic move. Over the years, the company’s executives have shown their desire to re-enter China, one of the biggest markets in the world.

While Google’s apps and services are currently missing from China, Android continues to be the dominant mobile operating system in the country. The OS exists in the form of custom ROMs based off the AOSP, or Android Open Source Project version of Google’s mobile operating system, not requiring Google Mobile Services (GMS).

Lenovo Gets a Head-Start on CES With Four New ThinkPad X1 Devices

When you’re Lenovo, you go big or go home. And the company’s already gone through all of the trouble of setting up shop in Las Vegas, so it might as well announce a whole bunch of products, right? The Chinese computer maker is actually getting a jump on just about everyone else, with several updates to its well-loved ThinkPad X1 line four days before CES is officially scheduled to kick off (not that we’re keeping track, or anything).

The centerpiece of the big refresh is the ThinkPad X1 Tablet. The Windows convertible weighs in at an ultralight 2.4-pounds and sports the company’s signature full-size keyboard.

What’s really cool here is the device’s modularity, adding functionality to the tablet with clip-on accessories, including a battery pack that bumps life up to 15 total hours, a Presenter module that brings a pico projector and HDMI port, and a the novel 3D Imaging module, which brings a rear-facing RealSense 3D camera.

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga is almost as light, weighing in at 2.8 pounds and measuring 0.66 inches thick. The tablet features a stylus-like pen for making highlights and taking notes that is stored and charged inside the device. Users can also upgrade the convertible with an optional Samsung OLED display for improved visuals.

Targeted at more business-minded users, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is a 14-inch ultrabook that weighs in a 2.6 pounds. Along with the rest of the aforementioned devices, the Carbon offers up to 1TB of storage and option 4G LTE connectivity.

Oh, and there’s also a all-in-one. The ThinkCentre X1 AIO sports a 27-inch display on a thin frame and a number of options, including a USB C port the company hopes you’ll use to connect up to the new ThinkPad X1 Tablet.

The Tablet and Carbon arrive in February, starting at $899 and $1,299, respectively. The Yoga, meanwhile, is arriving later this much, starting at $1,449. Those looking to add the all-in-one to their desktop will have to wait for March. That one starts at $1,049.

Lenovo Opens Wholly-Owned Service Centres in Delhi, Bengaluru

In a bid to provide Indian customers an interactive experience, Chinese technology major Lenovo on Thursday announced two wholly-owned and operated service centres in the country.

These centres – one each in New Delhi and Bengaluru – will service and address Lenovo desktops, notebooks, and tablet-related queries, the company said in a statement.

“As we are shifting from a product-centric company to a customer-centric company, we find that there is an increasing need to focus on after sales service,” said Sudipto Ghosh, executive director (services),Lenovo India.

“The flagship service centres will also offer a more technology-driven Lenovo solution to our customers,” he added.

India is one of the first countries in the Asia-Pacific region to have Lenovo-owned service centres.

The centres are designed to create an interactive experience with an online queue management system where users can register their complaint online at service centre and which allows them to track their wait time.

In the near future, Lenovo accessories and warranty upgrades will also be sold at these centres.

Lenovo, an emerging player in the field of tablets and smartphones, has also launched an app called Lencare.

Available on Google Play, the app allows customers to register their machine, check their service order, schedule a call back and find a carry-in service centre close to their locality.

Currently, Lenovo has 200 partner-led service centres across the country.

“In coming months, Lenovo is planning to expand its service footprint by launching many more Lenovo owned service centres in India,” the statement added.

Lenovo S5 was launched at an event in China on Tuesday, and it sports an 18:9 display and dual rear cameras as its highlights. Other highlights of the S5 that the company is touting include a full metal body, 2.5D curved glass, face unlock, and new gesture-based UI to replace the hardware capacitive buttons. At the event, Lenovo also launched two new budget smartphones – the Lenovo K5 and K5 Play – both of which also bear dual rear cameras.

Lenovo S5 price

The Lenovo S5 price starts at CNY 999 (roughly Rs. 10,300) for the 3GB RAM, 32GB storage model, going up to CNY 1,199 (roughly Rs. 12,400) for the 3GB RAM, 64GB storage model, and CNY 1,499 (roughly Rs. 15,400) for the 4GB RAM, 128GB storage variant. All three models are up for registrations now on the company site, and will go on sale from Friday, March 23. It will be available in Black and Red colour variants.

Lenovo S5 specifications

The dual-SIM (Nano) Lenovo S5 runs ZUI 3.7 (based on Android O) and sports a 5.7-inch full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) IPS display with 2.D curved glass. It is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC (clocked up to 2GHz), coupled with 3GB or 4GB of RAM. The smartphone bears a dual rear camera setup, with two 13-megapixel sensors complete with autofocus, an f/2.2 aperture, and a dual colour temperature flash. The two cameras provide depth-of-field effects like Bokeh. On the front, it bears a 16-megapixel fixed focus camera with an f/2.2 aperture lens and 80.2-degree wide-angle lens.

The Lenovo S5 bears 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB of inbuilt storage options, all of which are expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB) in a hybrid dual-SIM configuration. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n (dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz), Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Sensors on board include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, magnetometer, and proximity sensor, apart from the fingerprint sensor on the rear panel that’s rated to unlock the smartphone in as little as 0.09 seconds and be 99.7 accurate.

Measuring 154×73.5×7.8mm, the Lenovo S5 weighs about 155 grams. It is powered by a 3000mAh battery that delivers 10W fast charging.

Lenovo Beats Samsung in Indian Tablet Market Shipments: IDC

Lenovo beat Samsung to capture the top position in the tablet market in India with 21.8 percent market share in the second quarter of 2017, a report said on Thursday.

According to the report by research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), the company’s tablet shipments marked an overall growth of 12.6 percent, primarily contributed by its healthy growth in the commercial segment.

Over 80 percent of its shipments were driven by specific commercial projects delivered to government, education and large enterprises.

“Digital projects across government and education sectors are the key driving verticals for the growth of the commercial sector,” said Celso Gomes, Associate Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC India, in a statement.

IDC observes the calendar year as the financial year in its reports.

Samsung slipped to the second place but maintained the shipments volume of the previous quarter with a market share of 20.6 percent.

The report said that a total of 7,22,000 tablets across all brands were shipped in the country in the quarter, marking a marginal growth of 2.9 percent from the previous quarter, despite the healthy growth in the commercial segment.

This was attributed to the decline of 13.8 percent in the consumer segment, resulting in a steep 26.8 percent year-on-year (YoY) drop in the total shipments.

The implementation of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) inhibited the growth of tablet shipments in the consumer segment, the report added.

“Uncertainty about the levy of the new tax structure restricted the stocking of inventory and in turn lead to limited sell-in of tablets in the country,” noted Gomes.

Datawind stood at the third position with a market share of 18.2 percent, followed by iBall at 15.2 percent.

With 49.6 percent quarter-on-quarter growth and 7.7 percent market share, Apple remained at the fifth position.

At IFA 2017 in Berlin, Lenovo took to stage on Thursday to launch a slew of products in its Yoga and Miix range of convertibles, apart from unveiling its mixed reality headset and a smart speaker. The Chinese company launched Yoga 920 and Yoga 720 2-in-1 convertible laptops, the Miix 520 detachable 2-in-1, Lenovo Explorer Mixed Reality headset, and an Amazon Echo-like smart speaker called the Home Assistant Pack, an Alexa-powered device that’s meant to augment the Tab 4 series of tablets from the company

The latest addition to Lenovo’s Yoga range of 2-in-1 convertibles is the Yoga 920. It boasts of a responsive far-field microphone to wake Microsoft’s Cortana up, even when the laptop is powered off, from a 4-metre distance. The Lenovo Yoga 920 convertible will start shipping from September in Europe, priced starting EUR 1,599 (roughly Rs. 1.22 lakhs). It will be available in standard Copper, Bronze, and Silver Platinum colours, in addition to limited edition Star Wars-themed designs protected with Gorilla Glass.

The Lenovo Yoga 920 convertible sports a 13.9-inch IPS touchscreen display with a choice of full-HD (1920×1080 pixels) or UHD (3840×2160 pixels) resolutions. It ships with up to an eighth generation Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM (up to 16GB), a 256GB SSD (up to 1TB). It comes with Windows 10, with support for Windows Ink and Windows Hello. Lenovo claims that Yoga 920’s display can rotate 360-degree at just 1.37kg weight. The convertible is coupled with Lenovo Active Pen 2 as a stylus. Other specifications include a 15.5-hour battery life, JBL speakers, Dolby Atmos sound for headphones, 2 USB Type-C ports (Thunderbolt and USB-PD supported), and 1 regular USB 3.0.

Lenovo Yoga 720 specifications, availability

The second entrant to Yoga series is the Lenovo Yoga 720 (12-inch) 2-in-1 convertible. This laptop already has two variants with 13-inch and 15-inch display sizes, but the new one bears a 12.5-inch full-HD (1920×1080 pixels) IPS touchscreen display with anti-glare coating. The laptop can be paired with up to seventh generation Intel Core i7 processors, and comes with a 4GB DDR4 RAM (up to 12GB) and 128GB SDD (up to 512GB). The laptop comes with Windows 10 with support for Hello and Ink using Lenovo Active Pen 2, Harman Kardon speakers with digital microphone array.

The Lenovo Yoga 720 weighs 1.15kg and gives a battery life of up to 8 hours. It has one USB Type-C 3.0 and USB Type-A 3.0 ports each. It will be available in October, however the pricing details have not been given.

After debuting the Miix 510 detachable 2-in-1, Lenovo has launched its successor Miix 520. The Lenovo Miix 520 sports a 12.2-inch full-HD (1920×1200 pixels) display and runs Windows 10 with support for Windows Hello and Windows Ink. It is powered by up to an eighth-generation Intel Core i7 processor with 4GB of DDR4 RAM (up to 8GB), and a 128GB SSD (up to 1TB). Apart from the regular version, Lenovo is also offering a cellular version of Miix 520 that has support for LTE connectivity.

In terms of features, the Miix 520 features far-field microphones, just like the Yoga 920, which can pick up your voice from a reasonable distance to activate Cortana. Lenovo has equipped it with one USB Type-C port, Lenovo Active Pen 2 stylus, adjustable kickstand, and a customised 3D-camera on the front. It features a full-size keyboard with 1.5mm key travel.

The Lenovo Miix 520 comes in Light and Dark Grey colours and will be available in Europe in November starting EUR 899 (roughly Rs. 68,580) with keyboard and stylus included.

Lenovo has a pretty niche range of virtual reality headsets, and its new wearable device aims to combine virtual reality with augmented reality. The Lenovo Explorer was originally showcased during the CES and makes the use of Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality platform. We know it will be priced at $349 (roughly Rs. 22,350) without controllers and $449 (roughly Rs. 28,750) with the controllers pack when it ships in October.

The Lenovo Explorer headset comes with dual cameras that allow VR motion tracking without the need of external motion sensors. But this doesn’t mean it will restrict your VR experience as there is a support for inside-out positional tracking along with a plenty of VR games and apps. You can use an Xbox controller as well.

You can also assign Microsoft Cortana for additional controls, in addition to the basic ones. The headset features two 1440×1440 pixel displays, one for each eye where you can even work on Microsoft Office apps if you want to stay away from distractions with support for keyboard and mouse.

Lenovo already unveiled its Alexa-powered Smart Assistant speaker back in January. Now, it has launched a similar smart speaker that only works in conjunction (attached via USB) with a Lenovo Tab 4 series tablet. “Visual information can be shared on the screen along with responses from Alexa,” the company said in a statement.

Called the Lenovo Home Assistant Pack, it is priced starting $79.99 (roughly Rs. 5,100) and will be available in October. The Alexa-powered speaker has two 3-watt speakers, and two built in mics that provide far field detection up to 3 metres. It weighs 300 grams.

Lenovo K8 Note will be available exclusively on Amazon India when it launches on August 9, according to the dedicated Web page set up by the e-commerce company. The Amazon India Lenovo K8 Note page shows that the smartphone’s highlight features will be performance and photography. Users can also opt to get notifications regarding updates about the K8 Note from the e-commerce site by signing up on the page. The upcoming Lenovo handset adds to the list of Amazon-exclusive smartphones in India, which includes the BlackBerry KEYone that was announced on Tuesday.

Lenovo K8 Note specifications

The Amazon India page for the Lenovo K8 Note highlights performance and photography as the notable features of the smartphone. A GeekBench listing revealed some key specifications of the upcoming ‘Killer Note’ model. According to the leak, the smartphone will run on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, and will be powered by a 1.4GHz MediaTek Helio X20 SoC, backed by 4GB of RAM. Both the processor and RAM are improvements over the K6 Note’s Snapdragon 430 SoC and 3GB of RAM.

Lenovo K8 Note India launch was confirmed last week on social media by the company, after a series of math-based quizzes asking fans to guess the name of the phone. The company has skipped the K7 Note moniker, and is skipping directly to the K8 Note name.

The reason behind going with ‘8’ is still unknown, but the number does suggest that the smartphone could sport a dual rear camera setup. To recall, the Lenovo K6 Note only featured a single rear camera, which makes it even more likely for the next iteration to get a dual camera module.
